About the DPRK Accountability Team
The Junior OSINT Researcher will join GRC’s specialized team focused on accountability for grave human rights violations committed by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK). GRC’s DPRK-focused projects involve:
- Investigating state-sponsored forced labour affecting North Korean nationals
- Analyzing transnational repression by the DPRK regime
- Conducting open-source and legal investigations
- Producing legal analysis, advocacy, documentation, and capacity-building outputs
- Working with local and international partners to promote survivor-centered accountability
These projects represent some of the most complex and sensitive investigations in the human rights field, requiring meticulous research, methodical analysis, and adherence to ethical and evidentiary standards.
Role Overview: Junior OSINT Researcher
The Junior OSINT Researcher will support ongoing investigations by collecting, verifying, analyzing, and preserving open-source information. The ideal candidate is a motivated, detail-oriented researcher who understands the legal and ethical framework underpinning investigations of human rights violations and international crimes.
Key Responsibilities
- Information Collection: Assist in gathering open-source data relevant to ongoing investigations, using advanced OSINT tools, digital footprints, publicly accessible databases, and social media analysis.
- Evidence Preservation: Ensure open-source material is stored and maintained in accordance with international standards and digital evidence protocols.
- Drafting and Documentation: Contribute to drafting project deliverables, including research reports, investigation summaries, and analytical briefs.
- Training & Events: Support the preparation and delivery of workshops, events, and capacity-building sessions.
- Project Support: Assist with tasks necessary for the smooth implementation of investigative and research activities, adapting quickly to emerging priorities.
Candidate Profile: Skills and Experience
Required Qualifications
- At least 2 years of experience conducting open-source research and investigations
- Bachelor’s degree in law or a related field (such as journalism, international relations, public policy, or political science)
- Experience documenting or investigating international crimes, human rights violations, or transnational repression
- Demonstrated ability to draft clear, structured investigative findings and reports
- Practical experience handling sensitive material responsibly, following ethical and security guidelines
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, demonstrating initiative and problem-solving skills
- Fluency in Russian and English, both written and spoken
Highly Desired Experience
- Work related to forced labour, transnational repression, or cross-border human rights violations involving Russia or North Korea
- Prior work on the North Korean context, including human rights, security, or geopolitical analysis
- Knowledge of international humanitarian law (IHL) and international criminal law (ICL)
- Familiarity with OSINT methodologies for accountability, including digital verification, geolocation, timeline reconstruction, and media forensics
