The Global Fund for Children (GFC) is inviting experienced consultants to apply for a three-month, fully remote consultancy focused on grantmaking operations assessment and process improvement. About the Consultancy
The consultancy comes at an important moment for GFC as the organization undergoes a transition in grantmaking team leadership. The successful consultant will help the organization examine how its grantmaking system currently operates, identify areas that create unnecessary friction, and recommend practical improvements.
GFC currently manages its grantmaking processes through Salesforce, including grant approval, disbursement, reporting, and closeout. Its grantee portal operates in English, Spanish, Portuguese, and French. The organization recently managed approximately $10 million in grants, with current-year projections of around $7 million across more than 300 partner organizations.
The consultant will therefore play a key role in helping GFC determine how its grantmaking operations can become more efficient while remaining aligned with its values and the needs of its global partners.
Key Responsibilities
A major component of the assignment will be to conduct a comprehensive assessment of GFC’s grantmaking lifecycle.
The consultant will map the organization’s current Salesforce workflow, examining processes from initial partner due diligence and approval through funding disbursement, reporting, and grant closeout. They will identify manual processes, duplicated work, unnecessary administrative requirements, and potential opportunities for automation.
Importantly, the assessment will consider the experience of three different groups: grantmaking operations staff, internal program teams, and grantee partners. This will allow GFC to understand not only how the system functions technically, but also how it affects the people using it.
The consultant will also review existing grantmaking manuals, due diligence procedures, and related documentation. Recommendations should support GFC’s trust-based approach by improving efficiency without creating unnecessary burdens for grassroots partners.
Where possible, the consultant will benchmark GFC’s practices against other trust-based philanthropic organizations and international intermediary funders.
Team Structure and Organizational Design
The assignment extends beyond process improvement. The consultant will also advise GFC on the future structure of its grantmaking operations function.
This includes recommending an appropriate team structure based on the organization’s grantmaking volume and complexity. The consultant will identify potential roles, responsibilities, skills, and staffing requirements, as well as possible trigger points for expanding the team as grantmaking activity grows.
Particular attention will be given to the balance between Salesforce knowledge, grantmaking expertise, process improvement, systems thinking, and organizational design. The consultant will also recommend how grantmaking operations should interact with functions such as Finance and Learning & Evaluation.
Who Should Apply?
GFC is seeking professionals with significant experience designing, managing, or advising on grantmaking processes within foundations, philanthropic intermediaries, or similar funding organizations.
Candidates should have strong functional knowledge of Salesforce as it relates to grantmaking. Salesforce administration or coding skills are not required, but applicants should understand how grants management workflows, automation, data structures, and nonprofit configurations operate.
Experience with trust-based or participatory grantmaking is highly desirable, as is experience working with international funders and organizations operating across multiple countries. Applicants should also demonstrate process mapping, change management, stakeholder engagement, facilitation, and organizational design skills.
Strong communication abilities are essential because the successful consultant will need to translate complex operational findings into clear recommendations for a non-technical audience.
Deliverables
The consultancy will produce several important outputs, including a current-state process map of GFC’s Salesforce-based grantmaking workflow, a findings memo identifying strengths, pain points, and risks, and prioritized recommendations for process improvement.
The consultant will distinguish between quick wins and longer-term improvements and identify changes that can be implemented without significant Salesforce development. The assignment will also result in recommendations for the future grantmaking operations team structure and a final presentation to GFC’s Senior Management Team.
Engagement Details and Application Deadline
The consultancy will last three months and is scheduled to begin in September 2026. It is fully virtual, meaning consultants do not need to be based in GFC’s Washington, DC, or London offices.
The organization has not specified a fixed consultancy fee. Applicants are asked to provide their own fee estimate as part of the application.
