About the Head of Finance Role

The Head of Finance will provide leadership for CIVICUS’ financial operations, ensuring strong financial governance, sustainability, and accountability.

Working closely with the Chief Operations Officer (COO), the successful candidate will help embed effective financial management practices across the organisation.

Key responsibilities include:

• Leading the organisation’s financial strategy.
• Managing budgeting and financial planning processes.
• Overseeing financial reporting and audits.
• Ensuring compliance with donor, statutory, and regulatory requirements.
• Strengthening financial systems, controls, and processes.
• Providing financial insights to support organisational decision-making.
• Managing and mentoring the finance team.
• Promoting transparency, accountability, and long-term financial sustainability.

The position requires a leader who can combine strategic thinking with hands-on financial management in a fast-moving, mission-driven environment.

Key Responsibilities and Leadership Areas

The Head of Finance will oversee several important areas, including:

Financial Strategy and Planning

The role will support organisational growth by developing effective financial strategies, managing resources responsibly, and ensuring financial decisions align with CIVICUS’ mission.

Donor Compliance and Risk Management

The successful candidate will ensure compliance with complex donor requirements, including funding regulations from:

• European Union institutions.
• US foundations.
• European government agencies.
• Other international funding partners.

Experience managing restricted donor funding within the nonprofit sector will be essential.

Finance Team Leadership

The Head of Finance will build and support a high-performing finance team by:

• Providing mentorship and guidance.
• Encouraging accountability and collaboration.
• Delegating responsibilities effectively.
• Developing staff capacity.

The role also involves supporting non-finance teams to better understand financial management practices through training and knowledge sharing.

Qualifications and Experience Required

CIVICUS is looking for a senior finance professional with strong nonprofit and international experience.

Applicants should have:

• A recognised professional accounting qualification such as ACCA, CPA, CIMA, CIPFA, or equivalent.
• At least seven years of post-qualification experience.
• Minimum three years’ experience in a Head of Finance or similar senior finance leadership role.
• Experience working in the nonprofit sector.
• Strong knowledge of financial compliance and donor regulations.
• Excellent written and verbal English skills.
• Experience managing geographically dispersed teams.

Candidates should also demonstrate:

• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
• Ability to communicate financial information clearly to non-finance colleagues.
• Experience implementing financial technology solutions.
• Knowledge of human rights and social justice principles.

Knowledge of an additional UN language is considered an advantage.
