Global health organization Jhpiego is seeking an experienced Data Scientist to join its Reaching Impact Saturation and Epidemic Control (RISE) project. This home-based position offers professionals across Africa an opportunity to contribute to disease surveillance, epidemiological modeling, outbreak preparedness, and health systems strengthening initiatives.
The role is open to candidates across Africa, with preference given to applicants based in Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, and South Africa.
About the Opportunity
Jhpiego, an affiliate of Johns Hopkins University, has spent over five decades improving health outcomes worldwide. Through the RISE project, the organization supports governments and health systems to strengthen responses to HIV, tuberculosis, malaria, maternal and child health challenges, and global health security threats.
The Data Scientist will work closely with epidemiologists, program managers, technical advisors, ministries of health, and international partners to transform complex health data into actionable insights that support decision-making and public health interventions.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
Data Analytics and Modeling
- Developing and refining epidemiological and analytical models
- Supporting outbreak detection and disease surveillance activities
- Conducting statistical analyses for health research and program evaluations
- Performing model validation, calibration, and predictive analysis
- Supporting risk assessments and emergency response planning
Data Management and Quality Assurance
- Cleaning, transforming, and validating health datasets
- Monitoring data quality and identifying reporting anomalies
- Developing automated data processing tools and scripts
- Managing surveillance and research databases
Reporting and Data Visualization
- Creating technical reports and data summaries
- Designing dashboards and visualizations using Power BI
- Producing maps and geospatial analyses using GIS platforms
- Supporting routine and emergency health reporting requirements
Collaboration and Partnership Support
- Working with ministries of health and international partners
- Supporting evidence-based decision-making
- Presenting findings to technical and non-technical audiences
- Coordinating data-sharing and analytical activities
Qualifications Required
Applicants should possess:
- Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Statistics, Biostatistics, or a related field
- Master’s degree preferred
- 7–8 years of professional experience in data science and analytics
- Strong programming skills and experience with complex data analysis
- Expertise in GIS, outbreak monitoring, and spatial analysis
- Strong communication and problem-solving abilities
Preferred Skills
Candidates with the following skills will have an advantage:
- R and Python programming
- Machine learning and predictive analytics
- Power BI, DHIS2, and advanced Excel
- Data architecture and database management
- Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
- Statistical modeling and visualization
- Version control tools such as Git
