Global Ecosystems Atlas is Seeking a Consultant: Country Engagement Specialist (Remote) – Apply Before 23 February 2026

About the Role
The Country Engagement Specialist will support the Global Ecosystems Atlas, an open data initiative providing globally harmonized information on ecosystem extent and condition, aligned with the IUCN Global Ecosystem Typology.
The role focuses on:
- Securing open licensing and integration of national ecosystem datasets.
- Engaging countries to facilitate national and international use of Atlas outputs.
- Supporting uptake for reporting under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) and UN System of Environmental Economic Accounting (SEEA).
This consultancy emphasizes policy–science integration, national-level partnerships, and applied use of geospatial and environmental data.
Duties & Responsibilities
1. Country Engagement & Partnerships
- Build and maintain relationships with governments, statistical offices, environmental agencies, and mapping institutions.
- Coordinate with regional organizations and capacity-building centers.
- Act as liaison between national stakeholders and Atlas technical teams.
- Represent Atlas in national, regional, and global forums (biodiversity monitoring, ecosystem accounting, CBD implementation).
2. Data Collection, Licensing & Integration
- Coordinate outreach to identify, access, and integrate national ecosystem datasets.
- Cross-walk national typologies to the IUCN Global Ecosystem Typology.
- Negotiate open licensing agreements (e.g., CC BY).
- Ensure datasets meet quality standards and track progress against Phase 1 deliverables.
3. Support Global Reporting & National Uptake
- Promote Atlas outputs for national monitoring, policy development, and reporting.
- Provide guidance for GBF and SEEA reporting.
- Support application of Atlas results in NBSAPs, GEF proposals, and investment planning.
- Organize or support workshops, expert meetings, and webinars.
4. Project Management, Coordination & Reporting
- Implement national engagement activities under the Atlas outreach strategy.
- Contribute to governance and donor reporting.
- Consolidate user feedback on platform usability and data needs.
Deliverables (by December 2026)
- National Engagement Update within one month of start, including priority countries, engagement status, dataset contributions, licensing, cross-walking, and opportunities/challenges.
- Two Atlas adoption case studies documenting national use.
- Coordination of ~20 engagements with national and regional partners, including targeted engagement with Armenia (CBD COP context).
- Atlas Platform Feedback Report compiling national user feedback to inform enhancements and Phase 2 planning.
Qualifications & Experience
Education:
- Master’s degree or higher in Environmental Science, Ecology, Geography, Environmental Economics, Natural Resource Management, Sustainability, Earth Observation, Statistics, or related discipline.
Experience:
- 7–10 years at the interface of environmental data, policy, and national/regional implementation.
- Proven ability to engage national governments, statistical offices, or environmental agencies.
- Experience supporting international reporting frameworks (GBF, SEEA, CBD).
- Familiarity with geospatial or ecosystem datasets and national integration.
- Experience in multilateral organizations, UN agencies, NGOs, or public–private partnerships is a strong asset.
Other Requirements:
- Strong understanding of national ecosystem data systems and environmental accounting frameworks.
- Knowledge of IUCN GET, Earth observation, geospatial tools, and ecosystem mapping applications.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and cross-cultural collaboration skills.
- Strong coordination, organizational, and reporting capabilities.
- Ability to work independently and operate effectively in global, multi-stakeholder environments.
Languages:
- Excellent English (oral and written); additional WMO official languages advantageous.
