Yale Global Health Emerging Scholars Program 2026–2027: Fellowship Opportunity for U.S. and LMIC Researchers

The Global Health Emerging Scholars (GHES) Program is accepting applications for its mentored global health research fellowship, offering researchers and health professionals an opportunity to develop their research skills while working with experienced mentors in the United States and low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).

The program is designed to prepare the next generation of global health researchers, educators and professionals to address complex health challenges. Fellows receive structured research training, mentorship and opportunities to work on projects connected to health priorities in participating LMIC settings.

The 2026–2027 GHES fellowship is a one-year, full-time research training program. Applicants should review the eligibility requirements carefully because the program has specific criteria for U.S. predoctoral applicants, U.S. postdoctoral applicants and LMIC postdoctoral applicants.

About the Global Health Emerging Scholars Program

The GHES program brings together U.S. and LMIC research institutions through long-term collaborations in research, funding and mentorship.

The program uses a multidisciplinary approach to address global health challenges, particularly those linked to rapid urbanisation, poverty and resource-limited settings. Research areas include chronic and noncommunicable diseases, HIV and other infectious diseases, environmental health, maternal and child health, injuries and trauma, mental health, and improving access to quality healthcare.

The training curriculum includes Innovation Design, Rigor and Reproducibility, Leadership, and Data Science/AI. Fellows are trained to develop practical solutions, conduct high-quality research, work collaboratively and use data-driven approaches in global health.

Who Can Apply?

The fellowship is open to specific groups of researchers and trainees.

U.S. postdoctoral applicants must have a doctoral or health professional degree and generally must have completed their terminal degree or clinical training within the previous five years. U.S. applicants must be citizens or permanent residents.

U.S. predoctoral applicants must be enrolled in a doctoral or health professional degree programme and have passed the required qualifying examinations by the time of application.

LMIC postdoctoral applicants must be residents of one of the programme’s collaborating LMIC research sites and must have completed a relevant doctoral or health professional degree. LMIC applicants are not eligible for the predoctoral fellowship.

Applicants must also have a professional relationship with a primary U.S. GHES mentor and a primary LMIC GHES mentor. U.S. mentors must be affiliated with one of the participating universities, while LMIC mentors must be affiliated with a collaborating LMIC research training site.

Research Training and Mentorship

The fellowship is built around mentored research. Applicants are expected to identify a research area and training site that align with their interests and career goals.

Before applying, prospective fellows should review the available research training sites and identify suitable mentors. Applicants are encouraged to contact their potential mentors and programme managers well before submitting their applications.

The programme recommends that applicants spend substantial time developing relationships with potential U.S. and LMIC mentors and preparing their research proposal.

Research Areas

GHES supports research addressing major global health challenges in resource-limited settings.

Potential areas include:

  • Maternal and child health
  • Environmental health
  • HIV/STIs and infectious diseases
  • Chronic and noncommunicable diseases
  • Mental health
  • Trauma and injuries
  • Healthcare access and quality
  • Health services and resource management
  • Innovative approaches to improving health systems

Applicants should select a research topic that aligns with the priorities and expertise of their proposed training site and mentors.

Application Requirements

Applicants must complete the online application and provide several supporting documents.

The application includes sections covering eligibility, personal information, professional background, fellowship details, research experience, career goals, mentors, mentorship plans and the proposed research project.

Required materials include a research proposal, two to three letters of recommendation, the applicant’s NIH biosketch and NIH biosketches for the proposed mentors.

The research proposal must include a title, abstract, background, specific aims, research methods, significance of the study and references. The proposal should be no longer than 1,500 words excluding the reference list and must follow the programme’s specified formatting requirements.

Fellowship Commitment

The GHES fellowship is a full-time 12-month commitment. Fellows are expected to dedicate their full working time to the programme and cannot hold another job during the fellowship period.

U.S. fellows must spend approximately 10–12 months at their LMIC research training site. LMIC fellows spend most of their fellowship at their LMIC site and undertake a 1–3-month training experience at their primary U.S. mentor’s university.

All fellows must also attend a mandatory five-day orientation at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, at the beginning of the fellowship year.

How to Apply

Applications are currently live. Interested applicants should first review the eligibility requirements, research training sites and available mentors before preparing their application.

Applicants should then complete the online application and upload all required supporting documents.

The programme strongly recommends contacting a GHES Programme Manager to discuss eligibility and the application process. Programme managers can also help prospective applicants connect with faculty mentors based on their research interests and career goals.

Final Thoughts

The Global Health Emerging Scholars Program provides structured research training, mentorship and multidisciplinary learning for eligible researchers working toward careers in global health.

With training in research methods, leadership, innovation and Data Science/AI, the programme is designed to support fellows as they develop research projects addressing important health challenges in LMIC settings.

Interested applicants should carefully review the current eligibility requirements and application materials and begin working with their proposed U.S. and LMIC mentors before submitting their application.
