The Guttmacher Institute is inviting applications for an influential senior leadership opportunity: Director of Global Advocacy. Posted in August 2026, this full-time position offers the opportunity to shape international advocacy, influence policy, and advance sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) on a global scale. Lead a Global Advocacy Strategy
The Director of Global Advocacy will report to the Vice President for Global Research and Advocacy and will play a central role in translating Guttmacher’s research into effective advocacy strategies.
The successful candidate will develop and continuously refine the Institute’s global advocacy and communications strategy, identifying opportunities where research and evidence can influence policy. They will monitor international political and policy developments related to SRHR and advise senior leadership on emerging opportunities and challenges.
A major component of the position will involve contributing to global discussions around the post-2030 development agenda, particularly SRHR indicators, targets, and accountability mechanisms. The Director will also work closely with international research colleagues to ensure that advocacy priorities are closely connected to Guttmacher’s research agenda.
Represent Guttmacher at International Forums
This is a highly visible role involving representation at major international and regional meetings. The Director will serve as one of Guttmacher’s primary spokespeople and delegates at important global forums, including United Nations meetings, the World Health Assembly, and other high-level convenings.
The position will require the successful candidate to build and maintain relationships with UN agencies such as UNFPA, WHO, UN Women, and UNICEF, as well as bilateral and multilateral donors and regional institutions including the African Union and European Union.
Engagement with government delegations and member-state representatives will also be important. Through these relationships, the Director will work to ensure that evidence on SRHR informs policy recommendations and international decision-making.
Build Powerful Global Partnerships
Coalition building is another major responsibility. The Director will develop strategic partnerships with SRHR organizations, civil society networks, NGOs, advocacy coalitions, governments, and other stakeholders working across different regions.
Particular attention will be given to expanding Guttmacher’s relationships across sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as other regions central to the global SRHR movement.
The Director will participate in multi-stakeholder coalitions, support joint advocacy initiatives, negotiate strategic partnerships where appropriate, and establish mechanisms for regular information sharing and collaborative planning.
This makes the position particularly suited to an experienced advocate who has already developed strong international networks and understands how to work effectively across different political, cultural, and organizational environments.
Turn Research into Policy Action
One of the most important aspects of the role is knowledge translation. The Director will work with research teams to identify findings with strong advocacy potential and transform complex evidence into accessible and persuasive policy materials.
These may include policy briefs, advocacy toolkits, position papers, talking points, stakeholder presentations, data dashboards, and other advocacy resources.
The Director will also oversee Guttmacher’s participation in global advocacy campaigns, awareness initiatives, and digital advocacy activities, working with communications colleagues to ensure that research reaches the right audiences.
Experience with international and regional media will be valuable, as the position includes identifying media opportunities that support advocacy objectives and contributing to public-facing communications around global SRHR issues.
Support Fundraising and Resource Mobilization
The Director will also contribute to securing resources for global advocacy. Working with senior leadership and the Development Division, they will help identify and cultivate bilateral and multilateral donors interested in supporting global SRHR advocacy.
Responsibilities will include developing new funding opportunities, contributing to proposals and budgets, maintaining knowledge of the international donor landscape, and serving as a trusted representative of Guttmacher’s advocacy portfolio to funders.
Leadership and Qualifications
This is a senior-level position requiring significant experience. Candidates should have at least 10 years of progressively responsible experience in global advocacy, international policy, or a closely related field, with experience working in multiple regions and substantial expertise in more than one area of SRHR.
Applicants should demonstrate experience influencing policy at international, regional, or national levels through engagement with the United Nations, multilateral agencies, governments, civil society organizations, or intergovernmental bodies.
Strong coalition-building, research translation, communication, management, financial oversight, and leadership skills are essential. Experience living or working in low- and middle-income countries is preferred, while fluency in an additional language, particularly French or Spanish, is highly valued.
A Master’s degree in public policy, international relations, human rights, public health, international development, or a related discipline is required. The position also involves up to 30% international travel annually.

The advertised salary range is $188,800–$217,100 per year, with the stated range specific to the New York and Washington, DC areas. Actual compensation may vary depending on location, experience, skills, and qualifications.
