Role Overview

Key Responsibilities
The Lead, Environment and Nutrition will oversee and guide a variety of strategic and operational activities. Major responsibilities include:
Strategic Leadership
- Define the direction of GAIN’s environmental work and ensure alignment with the organization’s strategy.
- Act as the central focal point for environmental initiatives within GAIN.
- Promote awareness of GAIN’s environmental work both internally and externally.
Programme Development and Oversight
- Support country teams in designing and implementing projects that incorporate environmental sustainability.
- Provide technical guidance on food systems, climate change, and environmental sustainability.
- Periodically review environment-focused projects and ensure they meet programmatic standards.
Partnership and Stakeholder Engagement
- Build relationships with experts, partners, and institutions working at the intersection of climate, food systems, and nutrition.
- Engage with governments, donors, and international organizations to strengthen collaboration.
- Represent GAIN in global discussions related to sustainable food systems.
Resource Mobilization
- Identify funding opportunities and support proposal development for environment-related programmes.
- Collaborate with technical and programme leads to secure resources for new initiatives.
Team Leadership
- Manage and mentor environmental programme staff, consultants, and interns.
- Lead recruitment efforts for key roles related to environmental projects.
- Facilitate knowledge sharing and collaboration across GAIN teams.
Ideal Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will be a strategic leader with extensive experience in environmental and nutrition programmes. GAIN seeks a professional capable of managing complex, multi-country initiatives and building strong partnerships across sectors.
Key qualifications include:
- More than 10 years of professional experience in climate, environment, nutrition, or food systems programmes.
- Demonstrated experience leading or supporting multi-country projects, particularly in Africa and Asia.
- Strong knowledge of the links between climate change, nutrition, and sustainable food systems.
- Proven ability to engage with diverse stakeholders, including governments, donors, and private sector partners.
- Experience leading multidisciplinary teams and managing complex partnerships.
Applicants should also possess a postgraduate degree in a relevant field such as:
- Environmental science
- Food systems or food policy
- Sustainable development
- Nutrition or a related discipline
Experience with climate finance mechanisms or collaboration with the private sector will be considered an advantage.
Salary and Employment Conditions
The position is offered as a two-year fixed-term contract, subject to funding availability. Salary levels vary depending on the duty station.
Approximate annual starting salaries include:
- United Kingdom: £64,572 – £69,180
- Kenya: KES 6,236,928 – 7,127,928
- India: INR 2,934,888 – 3,355,596
- Germany: €74,844 – €80,184
- Belgium: €74,844 – €80,184
The role will be based in one of GAIN’s designated offices located in:
- London
- Nairobi
- New Delhi
- Berlin
- Brussels
