About the Vice President for Programs Role

The Vice President for Programs (VPP) serves as one of the organization’s senior executives, working directly with the President and CEO to guide Proteus Fund’s overall program strategy.

The successful candidate will oversee the organization’s donor collaborative portfolio while supervising four donor collaborative directors. They will also help develop new philanthropic initiatives, strengthen relationships with donors and nonprofit partners, and ensure grantmaking programs remain innovative and impactful.

This leadership role combines strategic planning, fundraising, program development, organizational leadership, and external representation.

Key Responsibilities

The Vice President for Programs will:

  • Lead Proteus Fund’s donor collaborative portfolio
  • Supervise donor collaborative directors and program staff
  • Develop new donor collaboratives addressing emerging social justice issues
  • Oversee strategic grantmaking initiatives
  • Build relationships with institutional and individual donors
  • Support fundraising and resource development strategies
  • Represent Proteus Fund at conferences and philanthropic events
  • Strengthen partnerships across nonprofit and funding communities
  • Collaborate closely with finance, grants management, communications, and operations teams
  • Participate in organizational budgeting and financial oversight
  • Present program updates and reports to the Board of Directors
  • Promote organizational learning and leadership development across program teams

The role also includes supporting the work of the affiliated Proteus Action League when required.

Qualifications

Proteus Fund is seeking an accomplished nonprofit executive with significant experience in social justice philanthropy and movement building.

Ideal candidates should possess:

  • At least seven years of leadership experience in social justice advocacy
  • Extensive knowledge of philanthropy and progressive grantmaking
  • Experience cultivating relationships with major donors and foundations
  • Strong fundraising and partnership-building skills
  • Proven success managing high-performing teams
  • Experience overseeing complex multi-stakeholder initiatives
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong strategic planning and project management abilities
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging
  • Ability to thrive in fast-changing environments

Experience working with fiscally sponsored projects is considered an advantage.

Work Location

This position is open to remote candidates located within the United States, provided they live near a major airport.

However, Proteus Fund strongly prefers candidates who can work primarily from its New York City headquarters.

The role requires:

  • Full-time employment (40 hours per week)
  • Approximately 20% travel, with additional travel possible for remote employees
  • Occasional evening and weekend commitments

Salary and Benefits

Salary

  • $177,432–$210,960 annually
