Role Overview

The (Senior) Director of Philanthropic Partnerships will serve as a senior fundraising leader responsible for expanding IPA’s philanthropic network and securing major gifts from high-value donors.

The successful candidate will lead efforts to identify, cultivate, and secure significant philanthropic commitments, including major gifts of $25,000 or more and principal gifts reaching six- and seven-figure levels.

This role combines strategic fundraising leadership with direct donor engagement. The successful applicant will be expected to build new philanthropic markets, strengthen donor relationships, and contribute significantly to IPA’s multi-year campaign, Building Evidence-to-Impact Ecosystems.

Key Responsibilities

Lead Major and Principal Gift Fundraising

The Director will manage the full donor engagement cycle, including:

• Identifying and qualifying potential donors and funding partners.
• Building relationships with major philanthropic individuals and foundations.
• Developing cultivation and solicitation strategies.
• Personally securing significant philanthropic commitments.
• Managing a portfolio of major and principal gift prospects.
• Supporting IPA’s long-term fundraising goals.

The role will play an important part in advancing IPA’s $15 million capital campaign and expanding support for strategic priorities through 2030.

Develop New Philanthropic Markets

A major focus of this position will be identifying new sources of philanthropic investment.

The successful candidate will help IPA expand relationships within priority donor communities, including:

• Artificial intelligence companies and technology leaders.
• Family offices.
• Finance and investment philanthropy networks.
• Evidence-based giving communities.
• United Kingdom philanthropic markets.

The role will also involve developing strategies to connect IPA’s research impact with emerging funding priorities.

Provide Team Leadership

The (Senior) Director will supervise and support two fundraising managers responsible for philanthropy operations, planned giving, and mid-level donor programs.

Responsibilities will include:

• Setting team goals and performance expectations.
• Coaching fundraising professionals.
• Strengthening donor management systems.
• Improving pipeline tracking and reporting.
• Supporting professional growth within the fundraising team.

Represent IPA Externally

The successful candidate will represent IPA at donor meetings, conferences, and philanthropic events.

They will work closely with senior leadership, including the Chief Partnerships and Philanthropy Officer, to strengthen external relationships and identify new opportunities for organizational growth.

Required Qualifications and Experience

Applicants should have extensive fundraising and partnership development experience.

Key requirements include:

• At least 10 years of progressive frontline fundraising experience for Director-level candidates or 15 years for Senior Director-level candidates.
• Proven success securing six- and seven-figure philanthropic gifts.
• Experience working with international development, global health, research, or higher education organizations.
• Experience building new donor markets and fundraising pipelines.
• Strong leadership experience managing fundraising teams.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Experience using Salesforce or similar CRM systems.
• Ability to translate research and evidence into compelling donor narratives.

Experience with randomized evaluations, evidence-based policy, development economics, or campaign fundraising will be considered an advantage.
