Sankofa Commons Seeks 10 Global Contributors for a 3-Week Remote Knowledge Curation Opportunity

The Sankofa Commons is offering a unique opportunity for 10 contributors from around the world to participate in a three-week knowledge curation project focused on amplifying indigenous, African and Global South knowledge systems. The opportunity is fully remote and is expected to begin in September 2026.
Organised through the Global Narrative Hive, Sankofa Commons is being developed as a monthly newsletter and emerging digital archive designed to trace, connect and amplify knowledge, practices, voices and resources from grassroots movements, communities, disciplines, languages and sectors around the world.
Applications are open until 27 August 2026.
About the Sankofa Commons Opportunity
Sankofa Commons aims to create a space where diverse forms of knowledge can be documented, connected and shared. Rather than concentrating exclusively on conventional academic research, the initiative seeks to recognise knowledge emerging from lived experiences, cultural practices, community organising, storytelling, memory and other forms of collective learning.
To support this work, the Global Narrative Hive is looking for 10 global contributors who can help identify and curate resources for the repository.
The engagement will last approximately three weeks, beginning in September 2026. Each selected contributor will receive US$250 upon completion, with 50% of the payment provided upfront.
Because the opportunity is designed to draw on perspectives from different communities and regions, contributors can participate from anywhere in the world.
Who Can Apply?
The opportunity is particularly relevant to people working across research, culture, communications, media, activism, arts, archives and community development.
Potential applicants include:
- Researchers and academics
- Cultural workers
- Media practitioners
- Artists and creatives
- Activists
- Archivists
- Community organisers
- Knowledge equity practitioners
- Individuals working with grassroots movements
- People engaged in indigenous, African or Global South knowledge systems
Applicants do not necessarily need to come from one specific professional background. Instead, the initiative is looking for people who can identify valuable knowledge and perspectives that may be overlooked by dominant knowledge systems.
What Will Contributors Do?
Selected contributors will help expand the Sankofa Commons repository by finding, documenting and summarising relevant resources.
Each contributor will be expected to submit a minimum of 20 resources during the three-week engagement. Every resource should be accompanied by a two- to three-sentence summary explaining its relevance.
Resources may include articles, publications, videos, podcasts, social media content, websites, archives and repositories. Contributors may also identify individuals, organisations, collectives, initiatives, gatherings and other sources that demonstrate alternative ways of understanding, learning and organising.
The initiative is particularly interested in forms of knowledge that emerge through stories, memory, rituals, lived experiences and community organising.
Contributors will therefore have an opportunity to bring forward voices and practices that might not typically receive visibility through mainstream academic or institutional channels.
A Focus on Knowledge Equity
One of the central themes of the opportunity is knowledge equity.
Knowledge equity recognises that valuable knowledge exists across communities, cultures, languages and lived experiences. It also considers whose knowledge is preserved, whose voices are amplified and whose perspectives may be excluded from established systems.
For contributors, this means looking beyond familiar sources and identifying materials that can broaden understanding of social, cultural and community issues.
Applicants should be able to explain why knowledge equity matters to them and how more inclusive knowledge systems can contribute to creating a safer and more just world.
Key Responsibilities
Successful contributors will be expected to:
- Identify and curate relevant resources for Sankofa Commons.
- Submit at least 20 resources during the three-week engagement.
- Provide a two- to three-sentence summary for every resource.
- Highlight voices, practices and initiatives that challenge dominant knowledge systems.
- Bring perspectives from their communities, movements, disciplines, sectors or languages.
- Suggest new resource types or approaches that could strengthen the repository.
- Participate in a learning and experimentation process.
- Help identify gaps and opportunities within the knowledge repository.
The role offers contributors considerable scope to bring their own knowledge and ideas to the project.
Application Requirements
Interested applicants should prepare a concise application demonstrating their interest and suitability for the opportunity.
Applications should include:
- A CV.
- A short email explaining why knowledge equity matters to the applicant, including what it means in relation to building a safer and more just world.
- A short explanation of why the applicant is well positioned to contribute to Sankofa Commons.
Applicants are also encouraged to suggest creative approaches to knowledge curation. This could include proposing resource types or methods that are not specifically listed in the opportunity description.
This flexibility may be particularly valuable for applicants who have experience working with community-based knowledge, oral histories, cultural resources, digital archives or less conventional forms of documentation.
Remote and Global Participation
One of the major advantages of the opportunity is its global and remote nature. Contributors can be based anywhere in the world, allowing the project to incorporate perspectives from different geographical regions, languages, sectors and communities.
For professionals and emerging practitioners interested in knowledge management, communications, research, culture, advocacy or social change, the project could provide an opportunity to contribute to an international initiative while working remotely.
Compensation and Duration
The Sankofa Commons engagement is expected to begin in September 2026 and will run for approximately three weeks.
Each selected contributor will receive US$250 upon completion of the engagement, with 50% payable upfront.
With a defined three-week timeframe and a specific resource-curation target, applicants should ensure they have sufficient availability to identify, review and summarise at least 20 resources during the project.
