About the Finance Director Position
Reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer (COO), the Finance Director will lead Nuru’s U.S. finance department while working closely with finance teams across the Nuru Collective.
The successful candidate will oversee financial planning, budgeting, grant accounting, compliance, forecasting, reporting, payroll, and internal controls to ensure sound financial stewardship across multiple international entities.
Although fully remote, the role requires regular collaboration with colleagues in West and East Africa. Candidates should be available during overlapping working hours with African time zones and be willing to travel to Africa two to three times each year.
Key Responsibilities
The Finance Director will be responsible for:
- Leading the U.S. finance department and collaborating with finance teams across the Nuru Collective.
- Preparing monthly and quarterly financial reports, dashboards, and board presentations.
- Managing annual budgets and financial forecasting.
- Monitoring cash flow and financial performance across multiple entities.
- Developing donor budgets and financial reports.
- Overseeing grant accounting and ensuring compliance with funding requirements.
- Managing payroll and general accounting operations.
- Maintaining internal controls and financial policies.
- Ensuring compliance with U.S. GAAP standards and audit requirements.
- Supporting senior leadership with financial analysis and strategic decision-making.
- Managing contracts with finance vendors and external partners.
- Building relationships with finance professionals to promote best practices.
- Traveling to Nuru country programs in Africa several times each year.
Required Qualifications
Applicants should possess:
- Five to ten years of nonprofit finance experience within a U.S. 501(c)(3) organization.
- Experience leading finance departments at manager or director level.
- Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting, budgeting, financial planning, audits, and donor reporting.
- Experience designing and implementing internal control systems.
- Experience working across multiple countries or international entities.
- Willingness to travel internationally.
- Commitment to Nuru’s mission of poverty reduction through sustainable agriculture.
Preferred Qualifications
Candidates with the following will have an added advantage:
- Active U.S. CPA license or equivalent professional finance qualifications.
- Experience leading external audits.
- Knowledge of QuickBooks, NetSuite, and Google Workspace.
- French language proficiency.
