Words Without Borders (WWB) – Editorial Fellowship 2026–27

The Words Without Borders is inviting applications for its 2026–27 Editorial Fellowship, a part-time, remote opportunity designed to support emerging professionals seeking to build careers in international publishing and literary editing. Programme Overview

The Editorial Fellowship is a nine-month, part-time engagement beginning in September. Fellows will work approximately 20 hours per week and participate in a range of editorial and communications activities. The position is fully remote, allowing participation from any location; however, fellows are required to work within designated hours (10:00 am–4:30 pm ET, Monday through Thursday).

The fellowship is structured to provide practical exposure to every stage of digital literary publishing, from content selection to publication and promotion. It also introduces fellows to the editorial considerations involved in translation-based literature and nonprofit publishing environments.

Core Responsibilities

The editorial fellow will contribute to the daily operations of the magazine by supporting both editorial and administrative functions. Key responsibilities include:

  • Participating in editorial meetings and contributing to planning discussions
  • Preparing, formatting, and uploading digital content for publication
  • Managing contributor contracts and maintaining editorial schedules
  • Conducting research to identify visual and artistic content opportunities for publication
  • Assisting in the selection of excerpts from forthcoming translated books for feature publication
  • Producing at least one original piece of content for the platform
  • Proofreading and editing articles to ensure accuracy and consistency
  • Supporting archival projects, including the organisation, cataloguing, and categorisation of past content
  • Assisting with virtual and in-person literary events when applicable
  • Contributing to ongoing digital development and transformation initiatives
  • Supporting additional editorial and administrative tasks as required

Through these responsibilities, the fellow gains exposure to both creative editorial decision-making and structured publishing workflows.

Eligibility and Qualifications

Applicants are expected to meet the following criteria:

  • A bachelor’s degree is required; a master’s degree is considered an advantage but not mandatory
  • At least two years of postgraduate professional experience in a related field
  • Strong interest in international literature and global publishing landscapes
  • Demonstrated commitment to a career in publishing or editorial work
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Fluency in English, with knowledge of one or more additional foreign languages considered highly desirable
  • Strong organisational abilities, attention to detail, and initiative
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word or similar word-processing tools
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks effectively and meet deadlines consistently
  • Capacity to work independently as well as collaboratively within a small, dynamic team

Applicants must also be legally authorised to work in the United States in accordance with federal employment requirements. Non-US citizens must already possess valid work authorisation at the time of application.
