The prestigious fellowship provides young African scholars with an opportunity to gain practical experience at the World Bank Group (WBG), while contributing to development research, economic policy, technical assistance and lending operations.
Applications opened on July 15, 2026, and the deadline is August 25, 2026. Eligible candidates are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.
World Bank Africa Fellowship Program 2027
The Africa Fellowship Program is designed to strengthen the pipeline of African talent entering careers in international development institutions, governments, think tanks and academia. Selected fellows will undertake a six-month assignment beginning in January 2027.
Fellows will be placed at World Bank Group headquarters in Washington, D.C., or at a WBG country office. During the placement, participants will gain hands-on exposure to the work of a major international development institution and contribute to projects connected to poverty reduction and shared prosperity.
The fellowship is particularly suitable for young researchers whose academic interests align with the World Bank’s development priorities.
What Will World Bank Fellows Do?
Successful fellows will work alongside World Bank professionals and contribute to a range of activities. Depending on their area of specialization, assignments may involve research, economic policy, technical assistance, knowledge generation, policy design, institutional development and lending operations.
The program provides an opportunity to apply advanced academic knowledge to real-world development challenges. Fellows can also develop professional networks and gain insight into how international development programs and policies are designed and implemented.
The experience can provide a valuable foundation for future careers in development research, policymaking, international organizations, government, academia and think tanks.
Who Is Eligible to Apply?
The fellowship has specific academic, nationality and age requirements. Applicants must be nationals of Sub-Saharan African countries and must either be completing a PhD or have recently completed one.
To qualify, candidates must:
- Be enrolled in the final year of a PhD program, or be a recent PhD graduate who completed the degree within the previous three years.
- Be 32 years old or younger as of January 1, 2027.
- Have an excellent command of written and spoken English.
- Demonstrate strong quantitative and analytical skills.
- Have an academic specialization relevant to the work of the World Bank Group.
- Be a national of a Sub-Saharan African country.
The World Bank also states that women are encouraged to apply, supporting greater representation of African women in development research and policymaking.
Fellowship Benefits and Experience
The six-month fellowship offers participants practical exposure to the operations of the World Bank Group. Rather than being limited to academic research, fellows participate in professional assignments connected to development programs and policies.
Participants can expect to gain experience in areas such as development research, economic policy, technical assistance and lending operations. They may also contribute to knowledge production and dissemination, global and country policy development, and institution-building initiatives.
Selected candidates will be hired as World Bank consultants for six months, starting in January 2027. The program therefore offers both professional experience and an opportunity to understand the operations of one of the world’s leading development institutions.
Selection Process
The selection process takes place in two main phases.
During Phase I, a shortlist of candidates will be prepared for consideration by different World Bank Group units according to applicants’ areas of specialization. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
In Phase II, final selections will be made in consultation with relevant WBG units. Shortlisted candidates will receive notification of their selection status, while successful applicants will subsequently receive information about their fellowship and consultant appointment.
Because the application deadline is approaching, eligible PhD candidates and recent graduates should ensure that their applications are submitted before the closing date.
