Position Overview
BBBS of NYC is seeking a Director of Development to lead and execute a comprehensive fundraising strategy. Reporting directly to the Chief Corporate Officer, the Director of Development will oversee all aspects of fundraising, including individual giving, major gifts, institutional support, foundation grants, government funding, and planned giving. This is a full-time, exempt position based in a hybrid model with work performed in or near New York, NY. The Director will also travel to events, donor meetings, and other organizational functions as needed.

This position is ideal for a strategic thinker and experienced fundraising professional who is passionate about mentoring, youth development, and community impact. The Director will play a critical role in securing sustainable funding to support BBBS of NYC’s programs and mission.

Key Responsibilities

Fundraising Strategy & Execution

  • Lead the planning and execution of all fundraising initiatives, including individual giving, major gifts, institutional giving, and planned giving programs.
  • Develop strategies to grow individual and major donor revenue to at least $1 million annually, with ongoing evaluation of progress and goals.
  • Create and manage online fundraising campaigns via platforms like Classy or GoFundMe.
  • Manage a portfolio of 60–75 major donor prospects, cultivating, engaging, and soliciting gifts of $5,000 or more.
  • Conduct research to identify funding opportunities and maintain updated lists of prospective donors.
  • Collaborate with the Board of Trustees to engage donors and identify new fundraising opportunities.
  • Oversee the full grant cycle, including research, proposal writing, budget development, submission, reporting, and follow-up.
  • Ensure proper recognition and stewardship of donors, acknowledging contributions and strengthening relationships.
  • Develop personalized donor engagement strategies to enhance long-term philanthropic partnerships.
  • Supervise the Senior Manager of Institutional Giving and the Database Manager, ensuring high performance and accountability.
  • Assist with additional Development Department activities as assigned.

Leadership & Organizational Impact

  • Partner with organizational leadership to align fundraising strategies with mission-driven priorities.
  • Participate in organizational planning, providing insights to maximize revenue and donor engagement.
  • Represent BBBS of NYC at conferences, galas, and other public events, promoting visibility and engagement.
  • Support the organization’s diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility, and belonging (DEIAB) initiatives within fundraising and development activities.

Qualifications

  • 5–8 years of proven fundraising experience, with demonstrated success in both institutional giving and individual donor cultivation.
  • Track record of securing five- and six-figure gifts.
  • Excellent writing, research, and communication skills, with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Strong ability to build and maintain relationships with donors, foundation partners, and organizational leadership.
  • Proven experience managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Familiarity with CRM systems (preferably Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge) and online fundraising platforms.
  • Knowledge of the New York City philanthropic community is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and other technology tools relevant to fundraising and donor management.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary: $85,000 – $100,000 annually
