The international child rights organization is seeking a consultant to develop a comprehensive Climate and Environment Education Curriculum that empowers children, youth, practitioners, and humanitarian workers to understand climate change while building resilience and promoting child rights.

About Terre des Hommes
Terre des Hommes (Tdh) is a leading international organization committed to protecting children’s rights and improving the lives of vulnerable children worldwide. As climate change increasingly threatens children’s wellbeing, safety, and development, Tdh has made climate resilience and environmental sustainability key priorities across its humanitarian and development programs.
Building on extensive research and collaboration with children, youth, and international experts, Tdh is now developing a practical curriculum that can be adapted for different countries and humanitarian settings.
About the Consultancy
The selected consultant will transform existing research findings into a complete, user-friendly curriculum package designed for practitioners, trainers, children, and young people.
The curriculum will promote climate awareness while strengthening psychosocial resilience, child participation, environmental action, and community engagement. It will also help humanitarian practitioners integrate climate education into child-centered programming across diverse contexts.
The consultancy is expected to begin in early September 2026 and will run for approximately 20 working days.
Scope of Work
The consultant will be responsible for developing a modular curriculum package that includes:
- A Climate Curriculum Overview Note.
- A core curriculum for practitioners.
- A Training of Trainers (ToT) manual.
- Child- and youth-friendly educational materials.
- A contextualization and adaptation guide for different countries and communities.
The curriculum should follow a structured learning pathway that moves participants from:
- Climate knowledge.
- Emotional understanding and resilience.
- Practical action and empowerment.
Curriculum Themes
The educational content will be organized around four major learning stages:
- Immerse.
- Understand.
- Perspective.
- Empower.
Cross-cutting themes throughout the curriculum should include:
- Child Rights-Based Approaches (CRBA).
- Psychosocial support.
- Participation and co-creation.
- Gender equality and inclusion.
- Environmental sustainability.
- Climate resilience.
- Child safeguarding.
Pedagogical Approach
The curriculum should prioritize engaging, participatory learning methods, including:
- Experiential learning.
- Creative arts.
- Storytelling.
- Games and play-based activities.
- Community action projects.
- Reflection exercises.
- Facilitator guidance and practical teaching tools.
The curriculum must also remain adaptable to different humanitarian, cultural, and socio-economic contexts while incorporating local and indigenous knowledge where appropriate.
Regional Focus
Although designed for global use, the initial curriculum should be particularly relevant to Southeast Asia, incorporating examples related to:
- Floods.
- Cyclones.
- Land degradation.
- Climate migration.
- Child labour.
- Other climate-related vulnerabilities affecting children.
Deliverables
The successful consultant will produce:
- An inception note outlining methodology and curriculum structure.
- A complete draft curriculum package.
- Practitioner training materials.
- A Training of Trainers manual.
- Child- and youth-friendly educational resources.
- A contextualization guide.
- A finalized curriculum package incorporating feedback from Terre des Hommes.
Required Qualifications
Applicants should demonstrate:
- Advanced expertise in climate and environmental education.
- Strong curriculum development experience.
- Experience creating educational or training materials.
- Knowledge of participatory and experiential learning methods.
- Expertise in child protection and safeguarding.
- Experience applying child-centered and rights-based programming approaches.
Additional experience working in humanitarian settings, mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS), NGOs, or Southeast Asia will be considered an advantage.
