Tribal Partnerships Program (TPP)

The Tribal Partnerships Program focuses on legal advocacy on behalf of tribes and Indigenous communities. Its priorities include:

  • Protecting Indigenous and public lands and waters from harmful exploitation.
  • Preventing rollbacks of health and safety standards.
  • Defending biodiversity and sacred sites.
  • Advancing clean energy initiatives.
  • Improving air and drinking water quality.
  • Enforcing pollution control laws.
  • Supporting federal grants and contracts that address environmental justice, pollution, toxic exposures, and climate change mitigation.

TPP works directly with tribal and Indigenous communities to ensure their rights, lands, and resources are protected through strategic litigation and advocacy.

Role Purpose

Earthjustice is seeking a Project Attorney to support TPP while a team member is on leave. This is a one-year, full-time role designed for litigation attorneys with 5–7 years of experience who are passionate about tribal and environmental law. The Project Attorney will:

  • Support litigation in federal and state courts.
  • Conduct administrative advocacy before federal agencies and state or local governments.
  • Develop and implement advocacy campaigns in collaboration with internal teams, lobbyists, and communications staff.
  • Collaborate with co-counsel and manage outside experts as needed.
  • Participate in strategy planning and case development.
  • Promote a diverse, equitable, and inclusive work environment.

The position may be performed remotely anywhere in the U.S., or on a hybrid schedule from an Earthjustice office, with travel required as necessary.


Key Responsibilities

  • Litigation: Support federal and state court cases advancing TPP’s mission, including environmental and tribal law matters.
  • Administrative Advocacy: Engage in rulemaking, policy enforcement, and regulatory matters with agencies and governments.
  • Campaigns & Collaboration: Work with colleagues to develop advocacy strategies and campaigns, coordinating with communications teams and co-counsel.
  • Community Engagement: Support Indigenous and tribal partners in environmental justice and legal matters.
  • Organizational Contribution: Strengthen the inclusive and equitable culture of Earthjustice through collaboration and mentorship.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree.
  • Active bar membership in your working location.
  • 5–7 years of litigation experience.
  • Expertise or experience in Federal Indian law, tribal law, and environmental law.
  • Excellent legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills.
  • Initiative, sound judgment, collegiality, and strong work ethic.
  • Willingness and ability to travel as needed.

Preferred:

  • Experience working with Indigenous communities, frontline groups, or NGOs.
  • Strong interest in environmental advocacy, clean energy transition, and environmental justice.

Compensation

Earthjustice offers competitive salaries, comprehensive benefits, and a flexible, collegial work environment. Compensation varies by location:

  • New York, NY & San Francisco, CA: $164,900 – $175,500
  • Chicago, IL; Honolulu, HI; Los Angeles, CA; Seattle, WA; Washington, D.C.: $156,700 – $166,700
  • Anchorage & Juneau, AK; Denver, CO; Philadelphia, PA: $148,400 – $158,000
  • Bozeman, MT; Houston, TX; Miami & Tallahassee, FL: $140,200 – $149,200
  • Remote (U.S.): location-dependent

Earthjustice is a qualifying employer for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program.
