About the Associate Director, Donor Communications Role
The Associate Director of Donor Communications will lead the day-to-day operations of ClimateWorks’ donor communications function. The successful candidate will oversee strategies, products, and communications touchpoints designed to build trust with funders, strengthen relationships, and support fundraising efforts.
The role involves supervising a donor communications team currently consisting of two direct reports. The Associate Director will manage three major areas: funder-facing product development and messaging, broad-based funder communications, and individualized stewardship and cultivation strategies for priority funders and prospects.
The position reports to the Director of Partner + Program Communications and works closely with the Philanthropic Partnerships team and other departments across ClimateWorks.
Key Responsibilities
The Associate Director will have a broad range of responsibilities, including developing compelling communications materials for philanthropic audiences.
Key duties include:
- Overseeing donor-facing decks, memos, talking points, narrative briefs, stewardship materials, and tailored two-page documents.
- Translating complex organizational and program strategies into clear, persuasive funder-ready communications.
- Developing and maintaining messaging frameworks for donor communications.
- Managing donor communications requests, workflows, priorities, and timelines.
- Developing segmented communications strategies for different types of funders.
- Overseeing individualized stewardship and cultivation plans for high-priority funders and prospects.
- Preparing leadership and program teams for meetings with funder principals and CEOs.
- Developing prospect engagement strategies to expand ClimateWorks’ philanthropic pipeline.
- Tracking prospect engagement and pipeline development.
- Supervising, coaching, and supporting the donor relations team.
- Collaborating with fundraising, communications, program, events, and creative teams.
The role therefore combines strategic communications, fundraising, donor engagement, project management, leadership, and relationship-building.
Required Qualifications
Applicants should have at least seven years of experience in fundraising communications, donor relations, development communications, or a closely related field. At least two to three years of supervisory experience is also required.
Candidates should have a strong understanding of how communications contributes to fundraising, including donor stewardship, cultivation, prospect engagement, and funder-facing content development.
Strong writing and editorial skills are essential. The successful candidate must be able to transform complicated organizational strategies into compelling materials for different philanthropic audiences.
Other important qualifications include:

Experience with philanthropic foundations, climate organizations, or mission-driven nonprofits is considered an advantage. Familiarity with Salesforce, Pardot/Account Engagement, Asana, Google Workspace, and presentation software is also desirable.
Salary and Benefits
ClimateWorks Foundation offers a competitive compensation and benefits package.
For this U.S.-based position, the salary ranges are:
- Tier 1: $130,000–$140,000 for the San Francisco Bay Area or New York City.
- Tier 2: $120,000–$130,000 for other U.S. locations.
