Badael is seeking an experienced Governance Consultant to support the development of stronger institutional structures and collective decision-making processes for SARD (Sustainable Archiving and Research for Documentation), a regional feminist oral history network working across the Arabic-speaking region.

This remote consultancy opportunity is ideal for professionals with experience in feminist facilitation, governance development, organisational transformation, and participatory decision-making processes.

About SARD and Badael

SARD is a regional feminist oral history network dedicated to documenting, preserving, and activating the experiences, political contributions, and collective memory of feminist actors, grassroots communities, and marginalised groups across the Arabic-speaking region.

Established in 2022 by four feminist organisations, SARD brings together partners working to preserve feminist histories and strengthen collective action.

As the network enters a new phase of development, SARD is seeking support to explore future governance models and identify the most suitable institutional pathway to strengthen its sustainability and collective leadership.

About the Governance Consultant Role

The selected consultant will guide SARD members through a participatory governance exploration process designed to support informed decisions about the network’s future structure.

The consultant will:

  • Assess current governance arrangements.
  • Explore possible institutional models.
  • Facilitate collective discussions among members.
  • Support feminist and inclusive decision-making processes.
  • Develop a governance roadmap for SARD’s future direction.

The consultancy requires someone who can create safe spaces for dialogue, support diverse perspectives, and transform complex discussions into practical recommendations.

Key Responsibilities

Governance Assessment

The consultant will begin by reviewing SARD’s existing governance systems, including:

  • Current decision-making practices.
  • Hosting arrangements.
  • Organisational structures.
  • Future institutional needs.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting consultations with founding members.
  • Identifying governance strengths and challenges.
  • Developing an inception note outlining methodology and work plans.

Governance Exploration and Research

The consultant will research and present governance approaches relevant to feminist networks, alliances, and regional collaborative initiatives.

This includes:

  • Mapping different governance models.
  • Sharing examples from similar networks and organisations.
  • Supporting discussions around opportunities, risks, and implications of different approaches.

Participatory Facilitation Process

A key part of the role involves designing and facilitating collective governance conversations.

The consultant will:

  • Lead participatory discussions with SARD members.
  • Facilitate a two-day in-person governance workshop.
  • Encourage meaningful participation and shared understanding.
  • Document key themes, agreements, concerns, and outstanding questions.

Institutional Roadmap Development

Based on the consultation process, the consultant will develop recommendations for SARD’s future.

Deliverables include:

  • A governance roadmap.
  • Proposed institutional arrangements.
  • Transition phases and milestones.
  • Priority actions.
  • A two-page final consultancy report.

Required Qualifications and Experience

Applicants should have demonstrated expertise in governance, facilitation, and feminist organisational development.

Required experience includes:

  • Proven experience designing and facilitating participatory processes.
  • Experience supporting feminist dialogue and collective decision-making.
  • Experience working with regional networks, coalitions, or alliances.
  • Knowledge of organisational governance and institutional development.
  • Understanding of feminist movements and civil society in the Arabic-speaking region.
  • Ability to synthesise complex discussions into clear recommendations.
  • Excellent written and spoken Arabic skills.

The ideal candidate will understand feminist approaches to leadership, collaboration, and organisational transformation.
