Front Line Defenders is seeking a Digital Protection Editor for a fixed-term, project-based consultancy focused on strengthening digital security resources for human rights defenders worldwide. This role is central to the continued development of Security in-a-Box, a globally recognised digital protection guide that has supported human rights defenders for over 20 years in managing risks related to digital information, communications, and devices.

The position is offered on a 12-month contract-for-services basis, with the possibility of extension subject to funding and organisational needs.

Front Line Defenders is an international human rights organisation headquartered in Ireland. It works exclusively to protect human rights defenders at risk, defined as individuals who face threats, harassment, or persecution due to their peaceful work in advancing the rights of others.

Project Context: Security in-a-Box

Security in-a-Box is a long-standing digital protection initiative that offers accessible, practical guidance to human rights defenders operating in high-risk environments. The platform addresses evolving digital threats and provides tools, strategies, and best practices for safeguarding sensitive information and communications.

The Digital Protection Editor will play a lead role in ensuring that the content remains current, technically accurate, and responsive to emerging risks faced by human rights defenders globally.

Role Purpose

The Digital Protection Editor is responsible for reviewing, updating, and expanding digital protection guidance under the Security in-a-Box project. The role combines technical research, content development, and editorial oversight, while coordinating with translators and digital publishing systems to ensure wide accessibility.

This position requires a high level of autonomy, strong technical knowledge, and the ability to collaborate effectively within a multicultural, international team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review, update, and maintain existing Security in-a-Box guides
  • Research and develop new digital protection resources aligned with current and emerging risks
  • Coordinate translation workflows using Weblate
  • Manage technical content production using Git-based platforms
  • Oversee digital publication and dissemination of updated and new guides
  • Contribute to research on global digital protection trends affecting human rights defenders

Remuneration and Contract Terms

  • Fee rate: €37 per hour
  • Estimated workload: Approximately 60 hours per month (around 15 hours per week)
  • Maximum annual remuneration: Up to €27,000
  • Payment schedule: Monthly, upon submission of activity reports and invoices

This is a consultant/contractor role tied specifically to the Security in-a-Box project and does not constitute an employment contract.

Essential Requirements

Applicants must demonstrate:

  • Strong, practical, and up-to-date knowledge of digital information security, including tools, operating systems, and risk mitigation strategies
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with proven editing and technical writing experience
  • Experience conducting technical research and translating complex concepts into accessible guidance
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with a diverse, international team
  • Flexibility, initiative, and strong organisational skills

Desirable Experience and Skills

The following will be considered strong assets:

  • Hands-on experience with Git-based environments (e.g. GitHub, GitLab, Codeberg)
  • Experience using Weblate or similar translation management systems
  • Background as a digital protection trainer or technical support provider
  • Knowledge of other protection domains, such as physical security or psychosocial wellbeing
  • Prior experience working with human rights defenders or human rights organisations
  • Interest in international affairs and demonstrated sensitivity to the contexts in which human rights defenders operate
  • Proficiency in additional languages, particularly French, Spanish, Russian, or Arabic
