2026 Opportunity:GI-TOC Hiring Analyst – Forest Crime Investigations in the DRC

Professionals with experience in investigations, organized crime, environmental crime, intelligence, or open-source research have an opportunity to join the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime (GI-TOC) as an Analyst – Forest Crime Investigations.http://globalsouthopportunities.com/
The home-based position is focused on the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and is designed for a professional based in Kinshasa. The role will contribute to investigative efforts addressing criminally driven deforestation, illegal mining, illegal timber exploitation, and associated illicit financial flows in the Congo Basin.
About GI-TOC
The Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime is an independent civil society organization headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, with a globally distributed Secretariat operating across 42 countries.
Established in 2013, GI-TOC brings together more than 750 independent experts and over 130 staff members working to understand and respond to organized crime. Its work combines research, analysis, policy engagement, and support for civil society organizations.
The organization examines how organized crime affects governance, development, security, conflict, stability, and the rule of law while supporting rights-based approaches to addressing these challenges.
About the Position
The Analyst will contribute to GI-TOC’s investigative work on forest crime in the DRC under the NICFI-funded “From Roots to Enrichment” initiative, which runs from 2026 to 2029.
The Congo Basin contains the world’s second-largest tropical forest and represents one of the most important remaining carbon sinks. In the DRC, forest loss is linked to multiple factors, including illegal timber exploitation, industrial agriculture, charcoal production, land pressure, conflict, displacement, and mining.
Illegal and expanding mining activities, particularly gold mining, can contribute to forest conversion and create connections between environmental destruction and wider organized crime networks.
The successful candidate will therefore help investigate the criminal networks and financial structures contributing to forest crime and support efforts to translate credible evidence into enforcement and policy action.
Key Responsibilities
A major focus of the role will be conducting investigations into criminally driven deforestation.
The Analyst will:
- Investigate illegal mining, illegal timber activities, and associated financial flows.
- Conduct open-source intelligence (OSINT) investigations.
- Map criminal actors, routes, corporate structures, and financial enablers.
- Use corporate registries, satellite imagery, trade data, and field research.
- Coordinate with consortium partners working in the DRC.
- Support field research and investigative missions.
- Review and quality-assure partner investigations.
- Produce intelligence reports, case studies, and risk typologies.
- Ensure investigative findings are properly sourced and verified.
- Maintain documentation in the project’s case management system.
- Contribute to investigations and remote monitoring related to Gabon.
The role will also involve working directly with law enforcement, environmental authorities, judicial counterparts, civil society organizations, investigative journalists, academics, and other partners.
Law Enforcement and Institutional Engagement
The Analyst will serve as a working-level point of contact between GI-TOC and relevant law enforcement, environmental, and judicial institutions in the DRC.
This will involve understanding the country’s enforcement and prosecutorial architecture, identifying credible counterparts, and determining where investigative evidence can realistically support cases.
The successful candidate will also translate investigative findings into briefings, case files, and referrals tailored to relevant authorities.
Tracking changes in policy, legislation, and enforcement will be another important component of the position.
Required Qualifications and Experience
Applicants should have three to five years of relevant professional experience in areas such as investigations, intelligence, organized crime, environmental crime, mining, corruption, journalism, law enforcement, regulation, civil society, or think-tank research.
Strong OSINT skills are essential. Candidates should be comfortable with activities such as:
- Corporate tracing
- Satellite imagery interpretation
- Open-source financial analysis
- Social media research
- Investigative research
- Intelligence analysis
- Evidence verification and triangulation
Applicants should also have a strong understanding of the DRC’s law enforcement, prosecutorial, and environmental governance systems.
Language Requirements
Fluency in both French and English is essential, in written and spoken communication. Interviews will be conducted in both languages.
Knowledge of Lingala or Swahili would be an additional advantage.
Desirable Experience
GI-TOC would particularly value candidates with an investigative or analytical track record involving:
- Environmental crime
- Illegal mining
- Illegal logging
- Organized crime
- Corruption
- Extractive industries
- The Congo Basin
- DRC or Gabon
Experience with international commodity flows involving gold, timber, and critical minerals would also be advantageous.
Existing relationships with credible civil society organizations or government, environmental, judicial, or enforcement counterparts in the DRC could further strengthen an application.
Personal Attributes
The position requires more than technical investigative skills. The successful candidate must be able to operate independently in politically sensitive environments while protecting themselves, sources, partners, and sensitive information.
GI-TOC is seeking someone who is:
- Operationally resilient
- Self-directed and investigative
- Politically astute
- Discreet and security-conscious
- Skilled at relationship management
- Collegiate and collaborative
- A strong and clear writer
The ability to work independently while maintaining effective communication with regional and global teams will be particularly important.
Contract and Working Environment
The position is offered on a one-year fixed-term contract with the possibility of renewal. The role is home-based, with the position focused on Kinshasa, DRC, and may involve fieldwork and engagement with partners and institutions.
GI-TOC also states that it provides a flexible working environment, supports work-life balance, and encourages professional development and learning.
How to Apply
Interested candidates should submit their application through GI-TOC’s recruitment system. Applications are processed through BambooHR, and correspondence concerning applications will be sent through the organization’s recruitment domain.
The vacancy does not specify a confirmed closing date in the listing. Candidates should therefore verify the current status of the opportunity before applying.
This is a particularly relevant opportunity for professionals who want to combine investigative research, environmental protection, organized crime analysis, and international development. Candidates with strong French and English skills and experience working in the DRC or wider Central African region should consider reviewing the full vacancy requirements and applying if the position remains open.
