To support this mission, Friends of the Earth is strengthening its People & Culture function and is seeking a highly skilled Senior HR Generalist (Compensation, Benefits & Compliance) to help deliver equitable, compliant, and people-centered HR operations.

Position Summary

The Senior HR Generalist (Compensation, Benefits & Compliance) plays a critical role in overseeing and administering core human resources functions across the organisation. This position serves as a trusted advisor to both employees and managers, ensuring HR practices are consistent, compliant, and aligned with organisational values.

Working closely with internal partners and HR leadership, the Senior HR Generalist contributes to the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of HR policies, compensation frameworks, benefits programmes, and compliance systems. The role is instrumental in mitigating organisational risk, supporting operational excellence, and fostering a positive, well-supported workplace culture.

Key Responsibilities

Benefits Administration (30%)

  • Administer employee benefits programmes, including health, dental, vision, retirement, life insurance, and leave plans
  • Lead the annual benefits enrollment process
  • Ensure accurate benefit deductions and timely updates
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for employee benefits and leave-related queries
  • Maintain benefits data and documentation within the HRIS system
  • Ensure compliance with applicable regulations, including COBRA, ACA, and ERISA
  • Coordinate with benefits vendors to resolve issues and enhance employee experience

Retirement Plan Management (10%)

  • Oversee administration of the organisation’s retirement plan
  • Act as the primary liaison with retirement plan brokers
  • Support compliance activities, annual testing, and rollovers
  • Communicate retirement plan updates and resources to staff

Compensation Management (25%)

  • Support the annual compensation review cycle
  • Conduct salary benchmarking and job evaluations to ensure internal equity and market competitiveness
  • Develop and recommend salary ranges for new and promotional roles
  • Partner with managers to process salary and incentive changes
  • Ensure payroll inputs are accurate and coordinated with accounting teams

Compliance & Reporting (10%)

  • Administer workers’ compensation plans and liaise with insurance providers
  • Support worker classification processes for employees, contractors, interns, and vendors
  • Review contracts requiring HR approval for domestic and international engagements
  • Support compliance with federal, state, and local labour laws
  • Maintain HR documentation, required postings, and audit readiness

HR Operations & Projects (25%)

  • Provide confidential and responsive HR operational support
  • Co-manage the HR inbox and employee inquiries
  • Support rollout of HR programmes related to compensation, benefits, and compliance
  • Collaborate with HR leadership to streamline and improve people operations processes

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive HR experience, with strong focus on benefits, compensation, and compliance
  • Strong knowledge of US federal, state, and local employment laws
  • Excellent problem-solving, judgement, and analytical skills
  • Ability to balance people-centred approaches with process and compliance requirements
  • Strong communication, organisational, and relationship-building skills
  • Experience managing HRIS systems (BambooHR or similar preferred)
  • High level of discretion and confidentiality

Preferred Qualifications

  • SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP certification
  • Advanced Excel and PowerPoint skills
  • Learning-oriented mindset with creative problem-solving abilities
