About the Remote Communications Job

The Communications Team manages a wide range of digital and creative projects, often connected to major policy developments, campaigns and organisational priorities.

The Special Projects Manager will work with internal teams and external creative and development partners to deliver projects such as campaign microsites, digital products, reports, event identities and international creative contests.

The role requires someone who can bring structure to complex projects and coordinate different stakeholders while maintaining high standards for quality, accessibility and timely delivery.

The successful candidate will need to understand both the creative and technical sides of digital communications and be able to translate ideas into practical project plans.

Key Responsibilities

One of the main responsibilities will be developing clear creative and technical briefs. The manager will gather stakeholder requirements, identify unclear or conflicting requests and turn them into actionable project direction.

The successful candidate will also oversee project progress and ensure that objectives, timelines and deliverables remain aligned with organisational priorities.

Another important area will be agency and contractor management. The manager will identify the expertise required for individual projects and help source and manage web development agencies, freelancers and other external specialists.

Quality assurance will also be central to the role. The successful candidate will establish clear completion standards, review project deliverables and ensure that work meets the approved brief and brand guidelines.

Accessibility will also need to be considered, including relevant WCAG standards, before digital projects are launched.

Digital Product Innovation and Special Projects

The position goes beyond traditional project management. FLI is looking for someone who can contribute ideas for digital products and innovative communications initiatives that support its mission.

The Special Projects Manager may lead major multi-month projects, including international creative contests and other special initiatives.

This requires strong planning, organisation and stakeholder-management skills. The manager will be expected to take ownership of projects from the initial concept through execution and completion.

The role will also support consistency across digital communications by working with the website development agency and helping maintain the organisation’s design system.

Qualifications and Experience

Candidates should have a strong track record of managing complex projects involving multiple stakeholders.

Professional experience across communications, design, digital products or web projects is required.

The ideal candidate should be able to transform unstructured ideas into clear project plans and secure agreement among stakeholders, including senior colleagues.

Experience developing or improving project delivery processes is particularly valuable. This could include improving project intake, review, approval or quality-assurance systems.

Experience managing external agencies, developers, designers or freelancers will also be beneficial.

Candidates should have strong judgement and quality-control skills and be confident requesting changes when a project does not meet the required standard.

Preferred Skills

Additional experience with website delivery, content management systems, SEO and digital audience growth would be an advantage.

Candidates familiar with Google Analytics 4, Google Search Console, technical SEO and on-page SEO may be particularly well suited to the position.

Experience working in nonprofit, policy, advocacy or campaign organisations is also preferred.

Applicants should be comfortable working under pressure, managing competing deadlines and proposing realistic alternatives when requests cannot be delivered as initially planned.

Remote Work and Salary

The position is fully remote and is open internationally within the specified timezone range of UTC-8 to UTC+1.

The salary is $100,000–$190,000 per year, with the final compensation determined according to the candidate’s experience and location.

For US-based employees, additional benefits may include health insurance, paid time off, paid parental leave, 401(k) matching, a work-from-home allowance and professional development support. Benefits vary depending on location.

Application Requirements

Applicants are required to submit a resume and, where available, a portfolio showing digital products or communications projects they have quality-assured.

Candidates must also answer two written questions. The first asks applicants to describe the digital or communications project they are most proud of and explain how their contribution was important to its success.
