What Does the Chief Operating Officer Do?
The COO will be a key member of Climate Interactive’s senior leadership team, overseeing operations, financial management, organizational effectiveness, and systems that support fundraising.
Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the successful candidate will act as a close strategic thought partner while taking primary responsibility for translating organizational strategy into practical plans, budgets, staffing structures, systems, and measurable results. The organization is entering a period of focused growth, making this role particularly important to ensuring that its infrastructure and capacity can support its new strategic plan.
A major part of the position involves operationalizing strategy. The COO will develop workplans, identify resource and staffing requirements, monitor organizational goals and KPIs, and help leadership evaluate opportunities based on mission impact, financial considerations, organizational capacity, risk, and operational feasibility.
Key Responsibilities
Financial and business management will be central to the role. The COO will lead annual budgeting, multi-year forecasting, scenario planning, financial analysis, and monitoring of actual performance against budgets. They will also work closely with New Venture Fund on accounting, compliance, reporting, and other financial processes.
The role also oversees important operational functions such as billing and invoicing, contract review, IT and resource management, risk management, and the development of policies and procedures.
Fundraising and business development are another important component. The COO will partner with the Executive Director and Associate Director of Fundraising to develop fundraising plans, revenue forecasts, and operational priorities. The position will also support fee-for-service, licensing, and advisory opportunities by overseeing budgeting, contracting, invoicing, and compliance.
The successful candidate will additionally lead internal people operations and culture-building, working with managers on performance management, professional development, feedback, and staff reviews.
Who Should Apply?
Climate Interactive is looking for a senior professional with 10 or more years of progressively responsible experience in organizational leadership, operations, finance, or related roles within nonprofit, mission-driven, or similarly complex organizations.
Candidates should demonstrate strong financial management capabilities, strategic and organizational judgment, experience with people operations, and the ability to manage organizational risk. Strong interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence are also important, as the COO will need to build trust and collaborate effectively across the organization.
Preferred experience includes working within a fiscally sponsored organization, leading organizational change or growth, scaling operations for long-term sustainability, building high-performing mission-driven teams, and experience in climate, environmental, or sustainability fields.
Remote Work and Compensation
The position is fully remote within the United States, with candidates expected to coordinate with the Eastern Time Zone. Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States.
Climate Interactive offers a starting salary of $155,000–$175,000, depending on skills and experience. The package includes employer-paid health, dental, and vision insurance, retirement contributions and matching, disability and life insurance, cell phone, internet and fitness benefits, paid vacation and health leave, paid holidays, volunteer leave, and 12 weeks of paid family and medical leave after 90 days.
