Role Overview
The Mangrove and Blue Carbon Analyst will join the Project Development team to design and implement advanced mangrove restoration strategies. With key projects concentrated in Central and South America and expansion planned globally, the role ensures that restoration initiatives are grounded in best-practice science and internationally recognized carbon methodologies.
This is a highly analytical and technical position. The successful candidate will safeguard the integrity of carbon accounting systems while ensuring compliance with leading voluntary carbon market standards. The role requires expertise in blue carbon methodologies, emissions and sequestration modelling, scenario analysis, and Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) systems.
Key Responsibilities
Blue Carbon Analytics
- Conduct carbon modelling and quantitative data analysis, including carbon stocks, soil organic carbon (SOC), biomass growth, leakage assessment, and uncertainty calculations
- Lead tidal hydrology modelling and hydrological restoration design
- Develop scenario modelling for emissions reduction and sequestration projections
Methodologies and Compliance
- Apply and track updates to carbon standards, including VM0033 and related methodologies
- Ensure projects remain compliant, credible, and aligned with best-in-class market expectations
Certification and Documentation
- Support projects from feasibility through validation and verification stages
- Prepare Project Design Documents (PDDs), monitoring reports, and technical submissions to standards such as VERRA
- Review baselines, additionality frameworks, and leakage assessments
Project Design and Implementation
- Contribute to the development of mangrove restoration strategies
- Develop internal standard operating procedures (SOPs) and analytical tools
- Provide operational analytics for carbon project assessments
Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV)
- Design long-term monitoring frameworks for carbon and biodiversity outcomes
- Conduct GIS and remote sensing analyses for land-use change and biomass estimation
- Integrate SAR and hyperspectral data in coastal ecosystem assessments
Stakeholder Engagement
- Collaborate with local partners, internal teams, and Validation and Verification Bodies (VVBs)
- Support due diligence, audit processes, and third-party verification requirements
Required Experience
- Demonstrated experience in planning and implementing mangrove restoration projects
- Expertise in mangrove ecosystem analysis and carbon stock assessment
- Proficiency in blue carbon modelling and assessment techniques
- Experience in tidal hydrology analysis and hydrological modelling software
- Familiarity with carbon certification standards (e.g., VERRA, Plan Vivo, Gold Standard, ACR)
- Knowledge of methodologies such as VM0033, VM0007, VM0024, and SCM0010
- Experience preparing or reviewing PDDs, MRV documentation, and baseline assessments
- Strong analytical and quantitative modelling capabilities
- Experience in coastal remote sensing and land-cover analysis
- Understanding of aquaculture–mangrove system interactions
- Marine fieldwork competence and water safety training
- Proven record of delivering complex, multi-stakeholder projects within contractual targets and budgets
Skills and Knowledge
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English and Spanish
- Ability to evaluate scientific data to inform evidence-based decisions
- Understanding of mangrove restoration best practices and blue carbon science
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office tools
- Basic programming proficiency (e.g., R, Python, or Java)
- Familiarity with core carbon accreditation concepts such as additionality, leakage, and dynamic baselines
