Overview

The Campaign Officer position at Climate Action Network (CAN) Africa is a strategic advocacy role focused on designing, coordinating, and delivering high-impact campaigns that advance climate justice and sustainable energy transitions across the African continent. The role is remote and reports directly to the Regional Coordinator. At present, the position has no direct line management responsibilities.

The Campaign Officer exists to translate CAN Africa’s policy priorities into coordinated, people-powered advocacy campaigns that mobilise civil society, strengthen member engagement, and hold decision-makers accountable at national, regional, and international levels.

CAN Africa is a leading civil society network advocating for a clean, just, and productive energy future for Africa. As the impacts of the global climate crisis intensify, the organisation works to accelerate the shift away from fossil fuels and toward renewable energy systems that support sustainable development, equity, and resilience.

CAN Africa plays a central role in shaping climate discourse and policy across the continent, engaging governments, communities, and international partners to promote climate action rooted in justice, equity, and African leadership.

Purpose of the Role

The primary purpose of the Campaign Officer is to lead the development and execution of advocacy campaigns that influence climate policy outcomes and public discourse. The role focuses on priority thematic areas including climate finance, just transition, loss and damage, adaptation, and renewable energy investment.

Working closely with CAN Africa members, partners, and thematic leads, the Campaign Officer ensures that campaigns are inclusive, strategic, and aligned with CAN Africa’s broader organisational objectives as well as global CAN campaigns.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Programme Development and Campaign Management

The Campaign Officer is responsible for leading the full campaign cycle, from strategy development to implementation and evaluation. Key responsibilities include:

  • Designing, planning, and executing advocacy campaigns that promote the phase-out of fossil fuels and the scale-up of renewable energy, climate finance, adaptation, and loss and damage responses.
  • Leading bottom-up and inclusive campaign strategy development processes with members and allies across Africa.
  • Coordinating the rollout and implementation of regional campaigns and supporting national and sub-regional campaign efforts.
  • Conducting research and analysis to stay informed on climate policy trends, energy technologies, and best practices.
  • Organising awareness-raising activities such as seminars, workshops, and webinars to educate stakeholders on CAN Africa’s campaign priorities.
  • Monitoring campaign progress and impact, and providing regular updates to internal teams and external stakeholders.
  • Undertaking additional tasks as assigned by the Regional Coordinator.

Movement Building and Mobilisation

A core component of the role is strengthening the climate movement across Africa through collaboration and collective action. Responsibilities include:

  • Leading organising efforts to build coalitions, alliances, and public participation across the region.
  • Supporting CAN Africa’s national and regional members to deliver synchronised and impactful campaigns.
  • Facilitating capacity-building sessions for members on campaigning, mobilisation, and creative advocacy actions.
  • Organising and supporting events, rallies, digital actions, and media-focused initiatives to increase campaign visibility and influence.

Partnerships, Fundraising, and Resource Mobilisation

The Campaign Officer supports the sustainability and growth of CAN Africa’s work by contributing to partnerships and resource mobilisation efforts. Key responsibilities include:

  • Supporting fundraising activities through donor scoping, engagement, proposal development, and reporting.
  • Strengthening partnerships with civil society organisations, networks, and allies at regional and international levels.
  • Promoting alignment and collaboration among partners to maximise campaign reach and effectiveness.

Transparency and Accountability

The Campaign Officer is expected to uphold high standards of transparency, accountability, and organisational integrity. Responsibilities include:

  • Demonstrating proactive adherence to best practices in transparency and accountability.
  • Maintaining open and regular communication with the Regional Coordinator on campaign progress, challenges, and risks.
  • Flagging issues early and contributing to problem-solving to ensure effective campaign delivery.
