About the Role

The Asia Protection Coordinator will provide leadership in responding to threats against human rights defenders throughout Asia. Working closely with regional colleagues and international teams, the coordinator will ensure timely, strategic, and effective protection responses while contributing to the organization’s broader advocacy and protection initiatives.

The role requires extensive engagement with human rights defenders, civil society organizations, and regional networks to strengthen protection mechanisms and respond rapidly to emergencies.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

  • Build and maintain secure relationships with human rights defenders across Asia.
  • Coordinate rapid responses to urgent protection cases.
  • Manage cases involving defenders at immediate risk.
  • Contribute to advocacy, campaigning, and visibility initiatives.
  • Support protection grants and capacity-building programmes.
  • Conduct research on human rights violations and emerging protection challenges.
  • Develop regional analysis on threats facing defenders.
  • Collaborate with partner organizations across Asia.
  • Lead annual regional planning activities.
  • Strengthen outreach to women and non-binary human rights defenders.

Required Qualifications

Applicants should possess:

  • Excellent written and spoken English.
  • Fluency in at least one additional Asian regional language.
  • Strong analytical writing and research skills.
  • Knowledge of human rights trends across Asia.
  • Understanding of challenges facing local human rights defenders.
  • Experience working with diverse cultural and social groups.
  • Knowledge of resilience and well-being practices for activists.
  • Familiarity with digital security tools and online safety.
  • At least five years of professional experience supporting human rights defenders.
  • Experience working with women and LGBTQI+ human rights defenders.
  • Previous experience in emergency or crisis-response environments.
