Appleseed Seeks Behavioral Researcher & Strategist: Remote Worldwide Job | Up to $124,000 Salary | 4-Day Week

Appleseed is seeking an experienced Behavioral Researcher & Strategist to join its international team working on complex social and environmental challenges. The opportunity is available worldwide and can be pursued as either a full-time Core Team position or a Freelance Project Lead role.
Core Team positions offer a salary of $95,000–$124,000, with potential salary growth beyond $160,000. Freelance Project Leads can earn $20,000–$22,000 per project, with approved international travel covered separately. One of the standout features is a four-day working week, with Thursdays off.
About the Behavioral Researcher & Strategist Role
The Behavioral Researcher & Strategist will combine behavioral research, strategy, storytelling and client partnership to help organizations address real-world development challenges.
The role is designed for senior professionals rather than entry-level candidates. Successful applicants will conduct field research, identify the behavioral factors influencing people and organizations, and translate research findings into practical strategies that can produce meaningful change.
The work may take place in challenging or low-resource environments, making adaptability, independence and comfort with international travel important.
Appleseed is recruiting for both full-time Core Team positions and Freelance Project Lead opportunities. Candidates joining the Core Team will initially undertake an approximately four-month freelance project to explore mutual fit.
Key Responsibilities
Field Research
The Behavioral Researcher & Strategist will conduct and support immersive qualitative research in low-resource settings. Research methods may include contextual interviews, observation, journey mapping, shadowing and co-creation.
The successful candidate will investigate the motivations, barriers and behaviors that influence real-world outcomes and use these findings to understand the root causes of complex problems.
Behavioral Analysis and Strategy
The role involves applying behavioral frameworks to development and environmental challenges. The researcher will diagnose underlying causes, identify opportunities for change and translate research into actionable behavioral strategies.
Strategies may involve messaging, habit formation, organizational change, products, services and physical or social environments.
Client Partnership and Storytelling
The successful candidate will work closely with clients as a trusted strategic partner. They will transform complex research and insights into clear narratives, frameworks, visual tools, playbooks and recommendations.
Strong communication and storytelling skills will be important when helping clients understand difficult issues, navigate uncertainty and make strategic decisions.
Team and Project Leadership
The role also involves supporting projects from planning and research through synthesis and final delivery. Team members will collaborate with colleagues and freelancers across different time zones while helping ensure projects are completed on time and to a high standard.
Typical Project Structure
Projects generally run for 10–15 weeks and combine remote work with intensive fieldwork.
The structure may include approximately 4–6 weeks of part-time remote preparation and research, followed by 2–3 weeks of full-time in-country fieldwork, and another 4–6 weeks of part-time remote synthesis, reporting and strategy.
Projects can address areas such as agriculture, clean water, sanitation, healthcare, education and early childhood development.
Who Can Apply?
This opportunity is aimed at senior behavioral specialists with substantial practical experience. Suitable backgrounds may include behavioral or UX research, communications and insights strategy, narrative or messaging strategy, social-impact consulting, field research, service or experience design, startup leadership or entrepreneurship.
Strong candidates should have practical experience applying behavior-change principles, strong research and analytical abilities, field-based research experience and the ability to turn complex findings into practical recommendations.
Excellent storytelling, client management, relationship-building and communication skills are also important.
Candidates should be comfortable working independently across time zones and adapting to challenging environments. A genuine commitment to social and environmental impact is also expected.
