African Futures Lab (AfaLab) is seeking an experienced Communication Lead to drive its communications strategy and amplify its work on racial justice, reparations, and social change across Africa and Europe. This fully remote opportunity is ideal for communications professionals with a passion for advocacy, storytelling, and policy engagement who want to contribute to meaningful global impact.

About African Futures Lab

African Futures Lab (AfaLab) is an Afro-feminist organization founded by two Black women following the global Black Lives Matter protests in 2020. The organization works to advance racial justice for Africans and people of African descent by promoting evidence-based dialogue, advocacy, and research.

Operating across Africa and Europe, AfaLab collaborates with activists, policymakers, researchers, and civil society organizations to address the enduring impacts of colonialism, slavery, and systemic inequality. Its work focuses on the intersection of racial justice with climate justice, gender equality, and socio-economic development.

As the African Union Decade of Reparations (2026–2036) begins, AfaLab is expanding its efforts to strengthen advocacy and influence policy discussions on reparatory justice, making this an exciting time to join the organization.

About the Communication Lead Role

The Communication Lead will play a central role in implementing AfaLab’s communications strategy while ensuring the organization’s research, campaigns, and advocacy initiatives reach key audiences across Africa and Europe.

Working closely with the Executive Director, programme teams, and external partners, the successful candidate will combine strategic thinking with hands-on content creation to increase organizational visibility, strengthen partnerships, and influence public discourse.

This role requires someone who can transform complex policy and research into engaging stories that inspire action and support advocacy goals.

Key Responsibilities

Communications Strategy and Planning

The Communication Lead will:

  • Lead the implementation of AfaLab’s communications strategy.
  • Develop annual and quarterly communication plans.
  • Create and manage editorial calendars.
  • Monitor communications performance using digital analytics.
  • Produce reports and recommendations for leadership.
  • Integrate communications into programmes, campaigns, and advocacy initiatives.
  • Monitor media trends and identify strategic opportunities.

Content Creation and Digital Communications

The successful candidate will:

  • Produce high-quality written and visual content.
  • Manage content across LinkedIn, Instagram, newsletters, and the organization’s website.
  • Lead communications for campaigns, reports, podcasts, publications, and events.
  • Maintain the organization’s visual identity and messaging.
  • Develop storytelling campaigns that engage audiences.
  • Explore innovative digital communication tools and approaches.

Media Relations and Partnerships

Responsibilities include:

  • Building relationships with journalists and media organizations.
  • Drafting press releases and media briefings.
  • Managing stakeholder and media contact databases.
  • Identifying media opportunities for research and advocacy.
  • Supporting communication around major organizational announcements and events.
  • Developing partnerships with advocacy organizations to strengthen shared messaging.

Research and Communications

The role also involves:

  • Reviewing research reports and policy publications.
  • Translating technical findings into accessible public communications.
  • Using evidence and audience insights to improve messaging and communication strategies.

Required Qualifications

African Futures Lab is looking for an experienced communications professional who can combine strategic leadership with strong storytelling skills.

Applicants should have:

  • A Master’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Political Science, International Relations, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • At least five years of professional communications experience.
  • Experience implementing communications strategies and integrated campaigns.
  • Experience communicating research, advocacy, or policy work.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.
  • Professional-level French language skills.
  • Strong understanding of racial justice, reparations, and social justice issues.

Technical Skills

Candidates should demonstrate experience with:

  • Strategic communications.
  • Digital storytelling.
  • Website management.
  • Social media management.
  • Newsletter production.
  • Canva.
  • Adobe Creative Suite, including InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator.
  • Video editing tools.
  • Microsoft Office applications.
  • Project management and communications analytics.
