The Africa Youth Climate Fund (AYCF) is inviting applications from passionate communications professionals for the position of Communications and Youth Engagement Officer. The successful candidate will support AYCF’s communications strategy, digital visibility, youth engagement initiatives, storytelling efforts, and public positioning as a leading youth-led climate finance organisation in Africa.

About the Africa Youth Climate Fund

The Africa Youth Climate Fund (AYCF) is a flagship initiative of the Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO) established to transform climate finance by ensuring young African climate leaders, innovators, and organisations have direct access to resources and opportunities.

Young people across Africa are leading climate solutions, community resilience initiatives, advocacy campaigns, and environmental innovations. However, youth-led organisations continue to face significant barriers in accessing climate funding and decision-making spaces.

AYCF works to address these challenges through a youth-for-youth grant-making model that supports:

Purpose of the Communications and Youth Engagement Officer Role

The Communications and Youth Engagement Officer will help strengthen AYCF’s public presence by developing compelling stories, managing digital platforms, engaging youth networks, and communicating the impact of youth-led climate action.

The role will support the organisation’s mission by ensuring that the experiences, innovations, and achievements of young climate leaders are effectively shared with:

  • Young people across Africa.
  • Climate partners.
  • Donors and investors.
  • Policymakers.
  • Media organisations.
  • Global climate communities.

The Officer will help shape AYCF’s institutional voice while ensuring ethical, inclusive, and accurate storytelling.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Communications and Brand Positioning

The Communications and Youth Engagement Officer will:

  • Support the development and implementation of AYCF’s communications strategy.
  • Strengthen AYCF’s visibility and reputation as a youth-led climate finance institution.
  • Develop communication plans, campaigns, and branding materials.
  • Support leadership with messaging, public positioning, and stakeholder communications.
  • Create communication products that explain AYCF’s mission and impact.

Digital Communications and Storytelling

The successful candidate will lead digital content development through:

  • Managing website, social media platforms, newsletters, and online channels.
  • Creating multimedia content including blogs, videos, podcasts, graphics, and publications.
  • Documenting stories from grantees, youth leaders, and climate innovators.
  • Producing reports, case studies, newsletters, and impact stories.
  • Monitoring digital engagement and improving communication strategies.
  • Maintaining digital resources and online platforms.

Youth Engagement and Community Building

The role will support meaningful participation of young climate leaders by:

  • Implementing youth engagement strategies.
  • Building relationships with youth networks, grantees, alumni, and partners.
  • Managing youth engagement databases and communication channels.
  • Supporting online and offline youth dialogues.
  • Organising webinars, consultations, and learning sessions.
  • Creating platforms for youth collaboration and knowledge exchange.

The Officer will ensure that young people’s voices remain central to AYCF’s communications and programmes.

Media Relations and Public Engagement

Responsibilities will include:

  • Building relationships with journalists, media houses, and communication partners.
  • Supporting media engagement strategies.
  • Developing press releases, speeches, opinion pieces, and key messages.
  • Monitoring climate and youth leadership conversations.
  • Supporting advocacy and public awareness campaigns.

Knowledge Management and Impact Communication

The Officer will also:

  • Document programme achievements and lessons learned.
  • Translate research and programme evidence into accessible content.
  • Develop knowledge products highlighting climate solutions.
  • Support communication of grant impact and youth-led innovations.

Events and Campaigns

The position will support:

  • Climate conferences.
  • Youth forums.
  • Policy dialogues.
  • Donor engagements.
  • Public campaigns.
  • Organisational events.

The Officer will coordinate branding, media coverage, digital storytelling, and post-event communication activities.

Required Qualifications and Experience

Applicants should have:

  • A bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, development communication, media studies, digital media, marketing, international relations, or a related field.
  • Three to five years of professional experience in communications, advocacy, media, youth engagement, or stakeholder relations.
  • Experience developing communication strategies and campaigns.
  • Experience managing digital platforms and social media channels.
  • Strong writing, editing, and storytelling abilities.
  • Experience producing reports, blogs, newsletters, publications, or multimedia content.
  • Experience organising events, webinars, and public engagement activities.

Preferred Experience

Candidates with experience in the following areas will have an advantage:

  • Youth-led organisations or climate movements.
  • Climate change communication and environmental advocacy.
  • African regional initiatives.
  • Policy advocacy campaigns.
  • CRM systems, email marketing tools, content management systems, and digital analytics.

Knowledge of French, Arabic, Portuguese, or another African language will be an added advantage.

Technical Skills Required

The ideal candidate should have:

  • Strong understanding of strategic communications and branding.
  • Digital communication and social media management skills.
  • Multimedia storytelling abilities.
  • Website management experience.
  • Knowledge of Canva and digital design tools.
  • Ability to analyse communication performance.
  • Strong facilitation and networking skills.
