About the Africa Youth Climate Fund

The Africa Youth Climate Fund is a flagship initiative of the Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO) focused on transforming climate finance systems by directing resources, opportunities, and decision-making power toward young African climate leaders.

Despite young people being at the forefront of climate innovation, advocacy, and community resilience efforts, youth-led organisations continue to receive limited access to climate funding.

AYCF works to address this gap by supporting youth-led movements, organisations, and innovators through a participatory grant-making model designed around equity, inclusion, and locally led climate action.

The fund supports initiatives in areas such as:

• Climate entrepreneurship and innovation.
• Youth movement building.
• Climate justice advocacy.
• Research and knowledge development.

Purpose of the Grants and Operations Manager Role

The Grants and Operations Manager will oversee AYCF’s grant-making systems, operational processes, compliance frameworks, and organisational systems.

The role will ensure that grants are managed effectively, transparently, and in alignment with donor requirements and AYCF’s youth-centred funding approach.

Working closely with the AYCF Executive Director, GAYO Finance, GAYO Operations, and programme teams, the Manager will strengthen systems that support efficient grant delivery and organisational growth.

The position will play a key role in ensuring that climate finance reaches youth-led organisations through accessible, accountable, and inclusive funding mechanisms.

Key Responsibilities

Grant Management and Grant Operations

The Grants and Operations Manager will:

• Lead the development and improvement of AYCF grant-making systems and procedures.
• Manage the full grants lifecycle from application processes to grant close-out.
• Develop grant management manuals, templates, and operational guidelines.
• Coordinate grant calls and proposal review processes.
• Support due diligence, contracting, compliance monitoring, and reporting.
• Maintain accurate grant tracking systems.
• Support grant review committees and ensure transparent decision-making.
• Promote equitable and participatory grant-making approaches.

Operations, Compliance, and Risk Management

The successful candidate will strengthen AYCF’s internal systems by:

• Improving operational procedures and internal controls.
• Supporting procurement, documentation, and administrative systems.
• Ensuring compliance with donor, legal, and organisational requirements.
• Maintaining operational records and audit-ready documentation.
• Supporting risk identification, monitoring, and mitigation.
• Developing digital tools, trackers, and dashboards to improve efficiency.

Grantee Support and Compliance

The role will also involve:

• Supporting grantee onboarding processes.
• Providing guidance on grant agreements, reporting requirements, and compliance obligations.
• Monitoring grant implementation risks.
• Managing amendments, extensions, and close-out procedures.
• Strengthening grantee-facing tools and guidance materials.

Financial Coordination and Accountability

The Manager will collaborate with GAYO Finance to:

• Monitor grant budgets and expenditure.
• Coordinate grant payment processes.
• Ensure financial documentation aligns with grant agreements.
• Support audits and compliance reviews.
• Strengthen accountability systems.

Required Qualifications and Experience

Applicants should have strong experience in grants management, nonprofit operations, institutional systems, or related fields.

The ideal candidate should have:

• A master’s degree in international development, public administration, business administration, nonprofit management, climate finance, law, project management, or a related discipline.
• A bachelor’s degree combined with significant relevant experience may also be considered.
• Five to seven years of professional experience in grants management, compliance, operations, or programme administration.
• Experience managing the complete grant lifecycle.
• Experience working with donor-funded programmes.
• Experience developing organisational policies, procedures, and operational systems.
• Strong knowledge of grant compliance, risk management, and internal controls.

Preferred Skills and Experience

Additional experience in the following areas will be an advantage:

• Working with grant-making institutions or philanthropic funds.
• Supporting youth-led organisations or grassroots movements.
• Experience with climate finance or environmental funding mechanisms.
• Digital grants management systems.
• Organisational audits and compliance reviews.
