CHEVS Launches Six-Month Pan-African Research Consultancy Across 9 African Countries

Experienced human rights researchers and research consortiums have an exciting opportunity to lead a landmark continental study with the Centre for Health, Equity and Visibility (CHEVS). The organization is seeking a Lead Research Consultant or Research Consortium to conduct a six-month, multi-country consultancy examining how African LBQTI-GNC communities are recognized, resourced, and supported within feminist Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) response systems.

The consultancy spans nine African countries and offers the opportunity to produce evidence that will inform advocacy, policy development, funding strategies, and inclusive programming across the continent.

About the Consultancy

CHEVS is commissioning a comprehensive mixed-methods research study to assess the inclusiveness of feminist SGBV response frameworks for Lesbian, Bisexual, Queer, Transgender, Intersex, and Gender Non-Conforming (LBQTI-GNC) communities.

The research will examine countries across Eastern, Southern, Northern, and West Africa, generating evidence to strengthen policies, funding mechanisms, and community-led responses that address violence and discrimination.

The study aims to explore:

• Existing Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) response systems.
• Funding models and resource allocation for SGBV programmes.
• Inclusion and exclusion of LBQTI-GNC communities within feminist and women’s rights organizations.
• Structural, legal, social, and economic barriers affecting access to services.
• Community-led protection and response initiatives.
• National legal and policy environments influencing inclusive SGBV programming.

The findings will support governments, donors, civil society organizations, and feminist movements in developing more inclusive and effective responses.

Key Responsibilities

The successful consultant or consortium will lead all phases of the research process, including:

Research Design

• Develop a detailed inception report.
• Design a comprehensive research methodology.
• Prepare a realistic work plan and risk mitigation strategy.
• Develop culturally appropriate qualitative and quantitative research tools.
• Apply a decolonial feminist and intersectional research approach.

Research Implementation

• Coordinate research activities across nine African countries.
• Map SGBV response systems and institutional actors.
• Analyze funding flows and identify systemic gaps.
• Assess inclusion of LBQTI-GNC populations within existing feminist structures.
• Review national legal and policy frameworks.
• Document innovative community-led violence prevention and response initiatives.

Reporting and Knowledge Products

The selected consultant or consortium will produce:

• Inception Report
• Data Collection Tools
• Comprehensive Research Report
• Internal Advocacy Brief
• External Policy Briefs tailored for governments, donors, and civil society organizations

The consultancy emphasizes producing evidence that can directly influence advocacy, funding decisions, and policy reforms.

Required Qualifications

Applicants should demonstrate:

• A minimum of seven years of professional experience conducting human rights research, policy analysis, or social assessments in Africa.
• Strong expertise in Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV).
• Knowledge of feminist resource architecture and intersectional rights.
• Extensive qualitative research experience.
• Experience conducting ecosystem mapping and funding flow analysis.
• Strong relationships with African LBQTI-GNC organizations and feminist movements.
• Excellent analytical, writing, and storytelling skills.
• Proven ability to prepare policy briefs and technical reports.
• Experience engaging with governments, donors, grassroots organizations, and civil society partners.
