Advocacy Manager at Chinese for Affirmative Action: $108,000 Hybrid Opportunity

Experienced advocacy and community engagement professionals have an opportunity to take on a senior role focused on advancing civil rights, civic participation, and social change. Chinese for Affirmative Action (CAA) is hiring an Advocacy Manager – CAA & SAH, a full-time position based in the San Francisco Bay Area with hybrid work eligibility.
The position offers a base salary of $103,438 to $108,000 per year and is designed for an experienced professional with a background in advocacy, organizing, civic engagement, voter engagement, or campaign management.
About the Advocacy Manager Role
The Advocacy Manager will play an important role in developing and implementing campaigns designed to mobilize Asian American and Pacific Islander communities at local, state, and national levels.
The successful candidate will combine advocacy strategy, community organizing, coalition building, civic engagement, and voter outreach to support policy and social change objectives.
The position also involves working closely with Stop AAPI Hate (SAH), a coalition focused on addressing racism and discrimination affecting Asian American and Pacific Islander communities.
Rather than being limited to one area of advocacy, the role covers a broad range of responsibilities, including campaign strategy, voter engagement, media, stakeholder relationships, volunteer management, and organizational leadership.
1. Lead High-Impact Advocacy Campaigns
One of the major advantages of this opportunity is the chance to take responsibility for significant advocacy campaigns.
The Advocacy Manager will identify strategic opportunities, develop campaign plans, coordinate implementation, and work with partner organisations to pursue policy wins.
Responsibilities include:
- Developing advocacy and civic engagement campaigns.
- Building and facilitating coalitions.
- Coordinating with community organisations and stakeholders.
- Developing stakeholder engagement strategies.
- Supporting policy advocacy goals.
- Organising advocacy events, convenings, and press conferences.
- Representing CAA and Stop AAPI Hate at public forums.
This makes the role particularly suitable for professionals who want to influence public policy while working directly with communities and movement partners.
2. Drive Civic and Voter Engagement
The position also provides an opportunity to lead voter engagement programmes.
The Advocacy Manager will oversee voter contact initiatives involving registration, education, persuasion, and turnout. The role includes developing multilingual and identity-based outreach strategies designed to reach AAPI voters effectively.
The successful candidate will also recruit, train, and manage volunteers and grassroots leaders involved in phone banking, text banking, and other outreach activities.
Data will play an important role in evaluating these programmes. The manager will monitor contacts, volunteer participation, conversion, and turnout-related results and use those insights to improve campaign strategies.
3. Build Powerful Community Coalitions
Advocacy work often depends on strong relationships between organisations, community leaders, government officials, and other stakeholders.
The Advocacy Manager will therefore have significant responsibility for building and maintaining partnerships at local, state, and potentially national levels.
The role requires someone with excellent interpersonal skills who can collaborate with diverse stakeholders and develop authentic relationships around shared advocacy goals.
Professionals who enjoy coalition building, negotiation, public engagement, and strategic relationship management may find this aspect of the position especially rewarding.
4. Develop Media and Digital Advocacy Strategies
Modern advocacy increasingly relies on digital communication, and this position includes responsibility for supporting media and online engagement.
The Advocacy Manager will work with the Communications team to develop campaign content, social media materials, advocacy emails, calls to action, and digital engagement strategies.
Strong writing and editing skills are therefore essential. Candidates should be comfortable translating complex advocacy objectives into clear messages that motivate communities and supporters to take action.
Experience with social media and digital engagement can provide an additional advantage.
5. Lead and Develop Staff
This is a management position, meaning the successful candidate will also be responsible for supervising members of the advocacy team.
The Advocacy Manager will oversee the SAH Advocacy Coordinator, assign work, establish expectations, provide guidance, identify training needs, and conduct performance evaluations.
The manager will also help resolve complex issues, support staff development, encourage collaboration, and contribute to a positive team environment.
For experienced advocacy professionals seeking to progress into leadership, this responsibility provides an opportunity to strengthen people-management and organisational leadership skills.
6. Competitive Salary and Employee Benefits
The position offers a base salary ranging from $103,438 to $108,000 annually.
Employees can also receive a range of benefits, including health, dental, vision, life, and long-term disability insurance. The organisation states that employee coverage for these benefits is fully funded, while dependent coverage is partially covered.
Additional benefits include an employer-funded health reimbursement account, paid time off, and a professional development stipend.
The position is eligible for hybrid work, although applicants must be based in the San Francisco Bay Area and be able to work in person at the CAA office and attend Bay Area or regional activities when required.
Who Should Apply?
Candidates should have at least 5–6 years of professional experience in organizing, advocacy, civic engagement, electoral campaigns, or voter engagement.
Applicants should also have at least 2–3 years of experience recruiting, training, and managing volunteers or grassroots leaders.
Additional qualifications include experience with multi-channel outreach, public speaking, large-scale events, advocacy communications, and stakeholder engagement.
Experience with VAN, texting platforms, dialers, volunteer management systems, and digital engagement tools is desirable.
How to Apply
Interested candidates should submit a resume and cover letter through the AACRE Careers page or the application link provided in the vacancy.
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, and early submissions are encouraged.
For experienced advocacy professionals based in the San Francisco Bay Area, the Advocacy Manager position offers the opportunity to combine campaign leadership, civic engagement, community organising, communications, and staff management while contributing to major civil rights and social justice initiatives.
