About the Research Annotator Role

Research Annotators will support AddressHate’s core research mission by analyzing online content from multiple social media platforms and contributing to the development of datasets used to train machine learning models.

Unlike traditional content moderation roles, this position requires thoughtful, research-based analysis rather than simple content labeling. Annotators will interpret nuanced language, cultural references, imagery, and evolving online narratives that contribute to hate speech across digital spaces.

The role reports directly to AddressHate’s research and technology teams and offers an opportunity to work on projects that influence education, platform governance, and public policy.

Key Responsibilities

Successful candidates will be responsible for analyzing a wide variety of digital content across platforms such as:

• TikTok
• X (formerly Twitter)
• Instagram
• Reddit

Primary responsibilities include:

• Conducting systematic annotation of online content.
• Examining text, images, memes, and multimodal communication.
• Identifying coded language, metaphors, irony, and indirect references.
• Recognizing patterns of dehumanization, conspiracy narratives, victim-perpetrator reversal, and normalization strategies.
• Distinguishing legitimate political expression from harmful hate-based discourse.
• Participating in annotation calibration sessions with other researchers.
• Refining coding frameworks and annotation guidelines.
• Collaborating with data scientists to improve AI detection systems.
• Producing analytical documentation that clearly explains annotation decisions.

Qualifications

AddressHate is looking for candidates with strong analytical and research skills.

Applicants should have:

• A completed or ongoing Master’s or PhD degree in Linguistics, Media Studies, Political Science, Semiotics, Hate Studies, History, Visual Studies, or a related field.
• Experience conducting qualitative content analysis and discourse research.
• Strong understanding of implicit and coded forms of online hate speech.
• Native or near-native English proficiency.
• Familiarity with major social media platforms.
• The ability to work independently and manage long-term research assignments.
• Emotional resilience to regularly review difficult online content, including antisemitism, racism, misogyny, and other forms of hate speech.

Preferred Qualifications

Candidates with the following experience will have an advantage:

• Research across multiple forms of hate and extremism.
• Multimodal analysis involving images, memes, and visual rhetoric.
• Experience using MAXQDA or similar qualitative research software.
• Strong academic or analytical writing skills.
• Residence in or near New York City.

Working Conditions

This is a part-time remote position requiring approximately 20 to 30 hours per week.

Although remote, applicants must be based in the United States, with candidates located in the Eastern Time Zone preferred. AddressHate also expresses a preference for applicants located in the New York City area.

The role is expected to begin on August 1, 2026.
