Position Overview
The Associate Manager – Project Accountant will report directly to the Grant Finance Manager and will play a pivotal role in implementing the financial infrastructure needed for MCD’s upcoming projects. This position focuses on project financial management, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and donor regulations, as well as nonprofit accounting standards. The Project Accountant will support project implementation, from start-up to close-out, managing project costs, reconciling accounts, analyzing financial data, and providing decision support to project staff and leadership.
The position is fully remote, though hybrid arrangements may be considered for candidates near MCD’s Hallowell, Maine office. Periodic meetings, conferences, and trainings may require attendance in public venues.
Key Responsibilities
The Project Accountant will be responsible for:
- Managing project finances throughout the lifecycle, including start-up, ongoing cost management, and close-out.
- Reconciling project accounts and producing accurate financial reports for project staff and donors.
- Conducting financial analysis and data interpretation to support strategic decision-making.
- Ensuring compliance with Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR), 2 CFR 200, and nonprofit accounting principles (GAAP).
- Collaborating with the Grant Finance Manager and Finance team to streamline financial processes and ensure transparency.
- Supporting budget planning and assessing the financial feasibility of project activities.
- Translating complex financial concepts for non-finance managers and staff to ensure understanding and informed decision-making.
- Evaluating industry best practices to continuously improve internal systems and procedures.
Required Qualifications
MCD seeks candidates who meet the following criteria:
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or a related field.
- 3-5 years of progressive experience in financial management, preferably in a nonprofit environment.
- Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles, GAAP, and USG rules and regulations.
- Proven experience in donor-funded project finance, including financial reporting, reconciliation, and compliance.
- Proficiency in financial software and reporting tools.
- Demonstrated analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Ability to handle multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment while meeting deadlines.
- Strong interpersonal skills and experience presenting financial data to staff at all levels.
Preferred Expertise
Candidates with the following qualifications will be highly competitive:
- Previous experience in nonprofit organizations with limited budgets and rapid growth.
- Familiarity with Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT.
- Exposure to global health projects and donor-funded program accounting.
Compensation and Benefits
